Last Tuesday, September 29th, the third season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted “Laws of Nature” and it was a great episode. As a quick update, or refresher, the third season will revolve around S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Phil Coulson and his team and allies, who are on a secret mission to build a team of Inhumans to deal with new threats to the world, while there are others that are also tracking down members of the Inhuman group.
The new season starts out with a new Inhuman character, Joey Guiterrez, being introduced who has recently developed the ability to melt metal
After developing metal-melting abilities, Joey Gutierrez, is being chased down by a new character introduced to the Marvel Universe in Rosalind Price, the leader of the ATCU, and her team. The ATCU, Advanced Threat Containment Unit (remember this for Captain America: Civil War), was created by the US Government after the events in the first Avengers and the second Avengers films and the destruction left behind.
Foiling the plan of Price and the ATCU, Agent Daisy Johnson, aka Skye, finds Joey and helps him to escape in a shuttle that is sent into the sky and into the new “Bus”. On the bus, Daisy tries to explain to Joey his new abilities by explaining its due to the recently released compound Terrigen. In an effort to help her, Daisy seeks out the help of Lincoln Campbell who helped her understand what happened to her, but Campbell is trying to live a normal life now.
Director Coulson searches to find Rosalind Price and talk, during communication they come to realize there is another party that is seeing out the Inhumans, a monstrous Inhuman name Lash. We then see Lash appear on the scene where Daisy found Campbell and he attacks them both. During this time, the ATCU arrives which causes both Lash and Campbell to flee the area. President Ellis, who was introduced in Iron Man 3 and mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, announces that the ATCU is trailing Campbell as a replacement to the underground S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
Agent Leo Fitz seems like he is a different person in this episode, he seems as though he has become a lot tougher and is angry. He acquired the ancient Hebrew scroll that describes the Kree Monolith, this is what consumed his partner Jemma Simmons, as “Death” which Fitz cannot accept At the end of the episode, we see Simmons running somewhere on a desolate alien planet and it would appear someone is chasing her.
I really enjoyed the first episode, still having a hard time accepting that Coulson only has 1 arm now, but they did show the ax in the episode that took off his other one. The character of Lash looked almost identical to the comic version of the character and i’m anxious to see what more becomes of his character. In this first episode, we didn’t see Agent May or former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent now Hydra leader, Grant Ward but they will be appearing this week. Grant Ward is also training the new agents of Hydra and trying to give Hydra a new image. Agent May is at a crossroads between her professional and personal life in episode 2 and we will also see her ex husband.
Also in episode 2 “Purpose in the Machine”, Fitz and the team enlist the aid of an Asgardian to unlock the secrets of the ancient monolith that swallowed Simmons. Lots of different things going on, so don’t lose track of the different stories all going on.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on ABC at 9:00 pm on Tuesdays, I’m watching this year with much interest as i’m waiting for Captain America: Civil War, and this show should set that movie up for all the fans.
