Fraser personally announced that production is underway, making it real in the best possible way. After years of fan anticipation and a long road back to the franchise, Rick O’Connell is suiting up once again.

The Whole Gang Is Back

What makes this news especially thrilling is that it is not just Brendan Fraser returning. Rachel Weisz is reprising her role as Evelyn O’Connell for the first time since The Mummy Returns way back in 2001. For fans of the original two films, this is enormous. Weisz famously did not return for 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and her absence was felt. Having both leads back together is exactly what this franchise needed, and it genuinely feels like a reunion worth celebrating.

Fraser will also serve as executive producer on the film, which speaks to just how personally invested he is in getting this one right.

New Directors Bringing Fresh Energy

Behind the camera, Universal has tapped Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo best known for Ready or Not, to helm the project. The screenplay was written by David Coggeshall. It is an interesting creative choice that brings fresh eyes to a beloved franchise while keeping the adventure spirit very much intact. Producer Sean Daniel, who worked on the original films, is also back, which is a reassuring sign of continuity.

Fraser Has Been Getting Ready

Earlier this year on The Tonight Show, Fraser gave fans a fun glimpse into his headspace about returning to the role. “I’m doing my best to get this 57 year old gear in shape,” he joked, showing the kind of self aware humor that has always made him so endearing. He also teased that production would return to some original filming locations before catching himself and laughing that he was giving away secrets. Even without the full details, that hint alone has fans buzzing.

A Franchise Worth Remembering

the Mummy 3

The Mummy franchise has grossed approximately $1.8 billion worldwide across all its films. The 1999 original and 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns are widely regarded as some of the most purely fun adventure films of that entire era. They have the action, the laughs, the heart, and a genuinely charismatic pair of leads at the center. After a 2017 Dark Universe reboot attempt with Tom Cruise that did not quite land with audiences, this continuation with the original cast feels like exactly the right call.

When Can We See It?

The Mummy 4 is now set for release on October 15, 2027, which is actually seven months earlier than the originally announced May 2028 date. The fact that Universal moved it up suggests real confidence in what they are making. We are absolutely here for it.
