The Simpsons Is Entering a New Era With Streaming Specials and a Movie Sequel on the Way

the Simpsons is Entering a New Era with Streaming Specials and a Movie Sequel on the WayThe Simpsons has been a part of our lives for four decades now, and the show that holds the records for longest-running American sitcom, longest-running U.S. scripted prime-time series, and longest-running animated comedy is not done yet. In fact, it is heading somewhere new.

Recent seasons have quietly reshaped how the show reaches fans. Seasons 35 and 36 both featured Disney+ exclusive specials alongside traditional Fox broadcast episodes. Season 35 had 18 episodes total, with four airing only on Disney+, while Season 36 offered 14 broadcast episodes plus four streaming exclusives. That is a noticeable shift from the 20 to 25 episodes per season fans were used to through Seasons 2 through 34. The shorter broadcast runs come with a real upside though: the streaming specials have given the creative team room to take bigger swings. Episodes like “O C’Mon All Ye Faithful” and “Simpsley” have shown what the show can do when it is not playing by traditional broadcast rules.

And then there is the big one. The Simpsons Movie 2 is officially coming, set to arrive in September 2027. The original 2007 film grossed $536 million worldwide, and after nearly 20 years, Springfield is heading back to the big screen.

For Disney fans who have grown up with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, this feels like a genuine moment worth getting excited about. The question is, what do you want to see in the sequel? Let us know in the comments!
