The trilogy that started with WandaVision comes to an end tonight. Marvel Television’s VisionQuest premieres Tuesday, October 13 with two episodes on Disney+, bringing back Paul Bettany as Vision and, for the first time since 2015, James Spader as Ultron.

Where We Find Vision
When the series opens, Vision is keeping a low profile, working at a pub in Edinburgh. He’s been rebooted, and he’s trying to make sense of memories that don’t quite feel like his own. To work through it, he turns to the AI personalities living inside his programming, which he calls his MindSpace.
That quiet life doesn’t last long. A bounty hunter named Paladin is hired to track Vision down, and to lure him out, Paladin kidnaps Thomas Shepherd, a young man on the run who may be Vision’s reincarnated son. Thomas has his own struggles with memories of Wanda and Vision, and both of them want to understand the connection between them.
The official logline sums it up: with a bounty on his head, Vision must confront his own nature and resist Ultron’s influence to survive.
Ultron Is Back, and He’s Changed
Here’s the big twist: Vision secretly kept a backup of Ultron after Avengers: Age of Ultron. For the last 12 years, Ultron has been locked away, and somewhere along the way, he’s developed a love of art, culture, and entertainment.
Don’t let that fool you, though. “In some ways, he’s even more dangerous, because he’s older and more mature,” James Spader said. Spader hadn’t played Ultron on screen since 2015, and he said he read the scripts with fresh eyes and found that the series works as its own story.
Showrunner Terry Matalas said the whole idea started with one question. He wanted to see Vision paired with Ultron instead of Wanda, and that led to the concept for the series. He added that he, Bettany, and Spader were “in complete creative sync” on the show’s tone.

A Story About Fatherhood
Paul Bettany describes VisionQuest as a mix of Pinocchio and Frankenstein, a story about fatherhood, identity, and the damage passed down through generations. “There are a couple of things you can do with robots. One is Pinocchio,” he said.
Bettany drew on his own experiences with his children while filming the scenes where Vision begins to feel that Thomas is his son. And he has high praise for Matalas, saying the showrunner “has done an extraordinary job wrapping up what turned out to be a really beloved group of shows.”
As for where Vision ends up? “Vision has a contract with the audience, and it’s that he is always in a state of change and self-discovery,” Bettany said.
The VisionQuest Cast
- Paul Bettany as Vision
- James Spader as Ultron
- Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff
- Ruaridh Mollica as Thomas Shepherd
- Todd Stashwick as Paladin
- Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y.
- Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H.
- James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S.
- Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E.
- Jonathan Sayer as U
Marvel fans will recognize a lot of those AI names. F.R.I.D.A.Y. and J.A.R.V.I.S. were Tony Stark’s assistants, and E.D.I.T.H. came from the glasses Tony left Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Emily Hampshire said her version of E.D.I.T.H. is driven by a “massive desire for life” and a fear of being expendable.
The End of a Trilogy

VisionQuest completes the story that began with the Emmy winning WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. The series also had its UK premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival, where Bettany and Matalas walked the red carpet.
If you missed it, Marvel surprised fans at New York Comic Con last week with a screening of the first episode. You can catch up on everything Marvel announced at NYCC 2026 and watch the latest VisionQuest trailer before you press play.
