Avengers assemble, one more time! Avengers: Endgame has passed Avatar to become the highest grossing movie in history again, thanks to its new Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release.
With the latest weekend numbers in, Endgame’s worldwide total is about $2.925 billion. That puts it just ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar, which sits at about $2.924 billion. After years of the two films trading places, Marvel is back on top by only a couple million dollars.
The Encore re-release opened in late September and has been a hit with fans. In its second weekend, it earned about $18 million worldwide, including roughly $4.5 million in the United States and $13.5 million internationally. That brings the Encore run to about $126 million so far. To get fans back in theaters, the re-release adds exclusive new footage and bonus scenes that lead into Avengers: Doomsday. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have called it “required viewing” before Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18.
The battle for the box office crown has had more twists than an MCU timeline. Avatar first set the record in 2010 with about $2.74 billion. Endgame passed it in July 2019 with about $2.79 billion. Avatar took the title back in 2021, thanks to a re-release in China. Now Endgame has reclaimed it, more than seven years after it first hit theaters.
This may not be the final chapter. Avatar’s 20th anniversary is coming up in 2029, and another re-release could push it back ahead, possibly as the first movie ever to reach $3 billion.
For now, the Avengers have won this round. With Avengers: Doomsday just a couple of months away, Marvel fans have a lot to celebrate.
