Mario fans hoping for a third trip to the Mushroom Kingdom just got a small but encouraging update straight from the plumber himself. Chris Pratt, the voice of Mario in Illumination and Nintendo’s animated films, says he hasn’t started recording a third movie yet, but he’s ready to jump back in whenever the team calls.
What Chris Pratt Said About Super Mario Movie 3

Speaking with ScreenRant on the red carpet for The Terminal List Season 2, Pratt revealed that the cast isn’t back in the recording booth yet and that the story for a third film is still being worked out. Even so, he made it clear he’s “down to do it” as soon as the filmmakers are ready.
That lines up with where things stand officially. Despite the ending and credits teasers of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie pointing toward more adventures, Universal has not formally announced a greenlight for a third film.
A Billion Dollar Franchise
It would be a big surprise if a third movie didn’t happen. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened in April 2026 and went on to become the first film of the year to pass $1 billion worldwide, a milestone we covered when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became 2026’s first billion dollar film. It earned $428.5 million in the United States alone, making it the highest grossing domestic release of the year at the time.
Add in the $1.36 billion from 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the two films have combined for roughly $2.3 billion, pushing Super Mario past Madagascar to become the ninth highest grossing animated franchise of all time. We also looked at how Mario stacked up this year in Mario vs. Star Wars at the box office.
Is a Mystery Nintendo Movie Already Dated?
Universal has quietly set an April 12, 2028, release date for an “Untitled Illumination/Nintendo Event Film.” Some fans believe that slot could belong to the third Mario movie, while others think the “event film” wording hints at something bigger, possibly even a crossover in the style of Super Smash Bros. For now, nothing about that film’s story has been confirmed.
If the third movie follows the same path as the second, an official announcement could still be a while off. The Galaxy Movie was announced in March 2024, nearly a year after the first film hit theaters, so some are watching for news around Mario Day (March 10) in 2027.
Who Could Return, and Who Could Join
Pratt is expected to return alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. The Galaxy Movie also expanded the cast with Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
The biggest question fans have is who might voice Princess Daisy. Daisy and Luigi have been paired together in the games for decades, so a third film could finally give Luigi his own leading lady and turn Mario and Peach into a double date.
Where to Watch the Mario Movies
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is streaming on Peacock through November 29 before it heads to Netflix on November 30, 2026. And if you want to step into the Mushroom Kingdom yourself, Super Nintendo World is open at Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando and at Universal Studios Hollywood.
