One of Universal Studios Florida’s longest running shows is coming back with a modern twist. Universal Orlando Resort just announced the Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse, a reimagined take on its classic behind the scenes horror show.
Here’s how Universal describes it: “In this live show, discover how Hollywood’s top special effects artists have terrified moviegoers for over 100 years, from Universal’s classic monsters to the modern horrors of Blumhouse.”

Universal Horror Make-Up Show Quick Facts
- Show: Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse
- Park: Universal Studios Florida at Universal Orlando Resort
- Location: Pantages Theater in the Hollywood area
- Original show opened: 1990, with the park
- Closed for reimagining: May 12, 2026
- New opening date: Not announced yet
From Classic Monsters to Modern Horror
The original Horror Make-Up Show showed guests how movie magic brings monsters to life, with plenty of jokes and audience participation along the way. The new version keeps that focus on special effects and makeup artistry and reaches past Universal’s classic monsters into the Blumhouse era of horror.
Blumhouse has a long partnership with Universal and has released hit horror films such as M3GAN, The Black Phone, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and The Purge through Universal Pictures. Universal hasn’t said which Blumhouse titles will be part of the show, but there’s plenty to choose from. Fans of Halloween Horror Nights 35 at Universal Orlando already know how well Universal and Blumhouse scares work together.
A Fresh Start for an Opening Day Original
The Horror Make-Up Show is one of the few attractions still running from Universal Studios Florida’s opening in 1990. It started out as The Phantom of the Opera Horror Make-Up Show and was renamed more than once over the years. It has always played in the Pantages Theater in the park’s Hollywood area.
The show closed on May 12, 2026, so Universal could reimagine it. At the time, Universal promised a new version that would mix “classic and modern horror properties along with shockingly fun surprises” while keeping the show’s comedic, irreverent tone. With Blumhouse now officially on board, we finally know where the modern horror is coming from.

When Does the New Horror Make-Up Show Open?
Universal hasn’t announced an opening date for the Universal Horror Make-Up Show featuring Blumhouse yet. Earlier reports pointed to a winter 2026 debut, so it could open in the next few months. We’ll update this post as soon as Universal shares the date.
