Marvel Zombies Returns With Three New Halloween Specials

October 8, 2026

The undead aren’t done with the Marvel Universe yet. At New York Comic Con, Marvel announced that Marvel Zombies is coming back with three new animated specials, one each Halloween season from 2027 through 2029.

Spoiler warning: This post includes details about how the original Marvel Zombies series ended.

Marvel Zombies Returns with Three New Halloween Specials

A Quick Look Back at Marvel Zombies

Marvel Zombies started as a fan favorite episode of the animated series What If…?, which imagined a world where a zombie outbreak overtakes Earth’s heroes. It was popular enough to get its own series on Disney+, which ended on a cliffhanger and left fans wondering about the fates of several heroes.

Now, those questions will get some answers.

The Three Marvel Zombies Specials

Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier (Halloween 2027)

The first special centers on Bucky Barnes. In the original series, Bucky was thrown a great distance by Wanda Maximoff, but his fate was never shown on screen, so fans have been wondering ever since if he survived.

Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, teased that the special “has some real big surprises in it.”

Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu (Halloween 2028)

The second special turns to Moon Knight. In the Marvel Zombies universe, Moon Knight wasn’t Marc Spector but Blade, who died in the series finale. That means someone new will be stepping into the role, and Marvel isn’t saying who yet.

Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian (Halloween 2029)

The final special is the biggest mystery of all. Marvel is keeping the identity of the Last Guardian completely under wraps.

“I won’t tell you who The Last Guardian is, but it’s very, very exciting,” Winderbaum told the crowd.

Fans are already guessing. Since some members of the Guardians of the Galaxy have already met their end in the Marvel Zombies universe, theories are focusing on characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and even Kraglin. Who do you think it will be?

A Familiar Director Returns

All three specials will be directed by Bryan Andrews, who directed the original Marvel Zombies and episodes of What If…?, so the specials should keep the same look and tone fans loved.

Perfect Timing for Spooky Season

Releasing each special around Halloween makes Marvel Zombies a new Marvel tradition for spooky season. With the first one arriving in 2027, there’s plenty of time to catch up on (or rewatch) the original series on Disney+ before the undead return.

Marvel Zombies wasn’t the only news from the panel. Marvel also announced Zodiac, a new spy thriller series, and set a January 13 date for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2. See everything we were watching for in our NYCC 2026 preview.
