If you have not stopped into Walt Disney Presents at Disney’s Hollywood Studios lately, now is a great time to make it a priority. Disney Imagineering has added brand new displays spotlighting two of the most anticipated projects in Walt Disney World’s near future: the Monstropolis land coming to Hollywood Studios and the upcoming refresh of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom.
A Peek Inside Monstropolis
The Monstropolis section of Walt Disney Presents has been updated with fresh concept art and display items following their debut at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and there is a lot to take in.
The showstopper is newly revealed concept art of the Glob Theater lobby, which replaces MuppetVision 3D and will serve as the home for the new show “Welcome to Monstropolis! With Sulley and Mike.” The artwork reveals a stunning space with blue walls, red curtains, eye motif chandeliers, a Monster Concessions stand, and theater doors with pre-show screens above them. A lit marquee entrance for the Glob Theater is also shown, and it looks absolutely incredible.
Additional concept art shows other areas of the land, including the entrance to Monstropolis, the interior of Harryhausen’s restaurant (yes, the beloved eatery from the films is coming to life, complete with a sushi-slinging octopus character), and more from the Welcome to Monstropolis show itself.
On top of the artwork, the display includes four maquettes of “monsterfied” street creatures: a monster pigeon, a splitting hare, and a monster squirrel. All designed by Imagineering and Pixar to bring personality and humor to the streets of Monstropolis. A laugh canister is also on display, hinting at theming elements from the land’s main attraction, the Monsters, Inc. Door Vault, which will be the first suspended roller coaster in any Disney park.
Monstropolis is set in the world after the events of Monsters, Inc., during the era of Laugh Power, and is currently on track for a phased opening beginning in 2027.
Carousel of Progress Updates on Display
The Walt Disney Presents exhibition is also giving fans an early look at the upcoming updates coming to Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. On display are the actual costumes for the refreshed Father and Mother characters, including Father’s Act I costume from 1969 and Mother’s futuristic Act IV costume. Maquettes show how the characters will be staged in their scenes, and new concept art gives a glimpse at what the updated attraction will look like when the work is complete.
These displays also made their debut at D23 before moving over to Walt Disney Presents, so this is your chance to see them up close without having to wait for the attraction to reopen.
Walt Disney Presents has always been one of my favorite spots at Hollywood Studios. If you have never visited or haven’t been in some time, these new Imagineering displays make it absolutely worth carving out time during your next visit.
