Seven years after Avengers: Endgame changed moviegoing forever, director Anthony Russo is reflecting on what it means to bring the film back to the big screen — and what fans can expect when they sit down for Avengers: Endgame Encore.
A Full Circle Moment
For Anthony Russo, the Encore release is deeply personal. In a new interview with Marvel, he described the re-release as “a full circle moment,” recalling the electricity in the air on opening night in 2019. “The energy that [night] had, was really the first sign of it,” he said, reflecting on how audiences responded to key moments in the film.
Russo also spoke about the strange timing of Endgame’s original run. The film released in the spring of 2019, and just months later the world was shut down by COVID. That context makes bringing Endgame back to theaters feel especially meaningful. “The timing of Avengers: Endgame was remarkable,” he said, adding that he is grateful the theatrical experience has found its footing again and that this Encore release is part of that recovery.
They Were Not Going to Touch the Movie
One thing Russo made very clear: the filmmakers were not interested in altering what Endgame already is. “We weren’t going to mess with what that movie is,” he said. The new footage added for the Encore release is designed to add narrative depth without disrupting the original film. The additional scenes appear in IMAX and Infinity Vision premium large format presentations, giving fans in those formats an even richer experience.
Setting the Stage for Avengers: Doomsday
The new content does serve a very specific purpose: setting up Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Russo shared that during the original production of Endgame, the focus was entirely on closing out the Infinity Saga. It was only years later that he and his brother Joe began mapping out where the characters could go next, eventually landing on the story that became Doomsday — which will feature Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU, this time as Doctor Doom.
Tony Stark’s Legacy
One of the most emotional moments in the interview came when Russo reflected on filming Tony Stark’s final sacrifice scene. He revealed that the scene was filmed on the same stage where Robert Downey Jr. originally auditioned for Iron Man — a detail that adds an almost poetic weight to everything that moment represents for the MCU.
