Disney+ Is Putting Ads on Every Plan — Even the Ones You Pay More to Avoid Them

Disney+ is Putting Ads on Every Plan Even the Ones You Pay More to Avoid Them

If you pay for a Disney+ subscription specifically to avoid commercials, you may want to sit down for this one. Disney has quietly updated its subscriber agreement to allow advertisements on every subscription tier, including the plans that have long been marketed as ad free.

What Changed?

Disney updated its subscriber terms of service, with the revised agreement dated June 18, 2026. The new language states that all plans “may include promotional content, sponsorships, and advertisements before and after playback of content and in channels.” That applies across the board. Standard and Premium subscribers are no longer exempt.

To be clear, Disney+ launched back in November 2019 without a single ad. A cheaper ad supported tier was introduced in December 2022 for those who wanted to save money in exchange for commercials. But now, even customers paying top dollar are subject to some form of advertising under the updated terms.

So What Kind of Ads Are We Talking About?

Disney Plus Ads

Here is the breakdown of what Disney is now permitted to show on all tiers:

Sponsorship messages around live sports and special events, trailers shown before programming begins, advertisements before and after playback, product integrations, Disney promotional content, and advertising required by streaming rights agreements.

The one protection still in place for Premium subscribers is that commercial interruptions during on demand movies and series are not permitted, at least for now. However, if you are watching live programming, sports, special events, or replays through Disney+ or ESPN content within the app, commercial breaks can run at any time on any tier.

There is also a notable catch: Disney’s updated terms prohibit the use of ad blockers. Subscribers who attempt to use blocking technology risk having their account suspended, their plan changed, or their viewing access restricted entirely.

How Are Subscribers Reacting?

Not well, to put it mildly. Reddit has been flooded with complaints since the terms went into effect. Subscribers have described the experience as having up to four ad breaks during a single 45 minute episode, with interruptions cutting in at jarring moments in the middle of scenes. Some users have drawn comparisons to watching content on free platforms like Tubi, and many have said they are seriously considering canceling.

One subscriber summed up the frustration with this: “The level of ads is bonkers.”

What About the Price?

Disney Plus Plans

All of this is happening at a time when Disney+ pricing has already climbed significantly. Annual Premium subscribers are currently paying $159.99 per year. Paying that much and still seeing pre and post playback ads, plus commercials during live content, is understandably frustrating for a lot of people.

Meanwhile, Disney is reportedly exploring a free, fully ad supported tier to compete with YouTube and social media platforms, which would only expand the company’s advertising inventory further.

What Should Disney+ Subscribers Do?

For now, there is no opt out option for the new advertising terms. If you are a Disney+ subscriber, the changes are the changes. It is worth keeping an eye on your viewing experience and deciding whether your current tier still makes sense for your budget and preferences.
