Disney Announces Changes to Spousal Healthcare Coverage for Employees Starting in 2027

Disney Announces Changes to Spousal Healthcare Coverage for Employees Starting in 2027Disney has notified more than 200,000 employees of a significant change to healthcare benefits that will take effect in 2027. Starting next year, spouses and domestic partners of Disney employees will no longer be eligible to enroll in the company’s health insurance plan if they have access to coverage through their own employer.

Under the new policy, spousal coverage will still be available, but only for spouses who cannot obtain insurance through their own workplace. If a spouse loses employer-sponsored coverage down the road, they would then be able to enroll in Disney’s plan. Vision and dental coverage are not affected by the change, and other employee benefits including tuition assistance, childcare programs, and retirement plans remain in place. Disney also announced several additions alongside the cuts, including an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, a doubling of Employee Assistance Program counseling sessions, and a consolidation of wellness programs.

Disney cited rising healthcare costs as the driving factor behind the decision. A company spokesperson said: “Like a growing number of large employers, we’re making measured adjustments to our employee benefits in response to rising healthcare costs nationwide.” That context is real, with industry-wide healthcare costs expected to rise 11.1% and double-digit increases projected for the fourth consecutive year. That said, the change has drawn criticism given that Disney reported record profits in recent quarters, and concerns have been raised that the policy could disproportionately affect lower-wage and hourly cast members who may be pushed toward less comprehensive coverage options.

It is worth noting that two-thirds of Disney employees who carry insurance do not currently select spousal coverage, so the direct impact may be more limited than headlines suggest. Employees will need to actively re-enroll during open enrollment, which begins in October, with additional benefit updates expected to be announced before then.

This is a developing story and we will keep you updated as more details become available. For Disney cast members reading this, we would love to hear your thoughts. Let us know in the comments how this change affects you and your family.
