The Gallopin’ Gaucho, directed by Walt Disney, was the second silent Mickey Mouse cartoon produced, after Plane Crazy. When Walt chose to add sound to his cartoons, he selected his third production, Steamboat Willie, to be released on November 18, 1928 as his first sound cartoon, and then added sound to The Gallopin’ Gaucho, which was released as his second cartoon with sound a month later on December 20, 1928.
Viewers with a keen eye may notice that the design of Mickey Mouse changes from the beginning of the film, in which he looks similar to his appearance in Plane Crazy, to the end of the film where he more closely resembles his Steamboat Willie self.
