Howdy Partner! The wildest ride in the West has been going through an extreme makeover at the Magic Kingdom. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is an attraction that is loved by many. It’s a classic. I know some fans were worried when they learned of the renovations that were taking place. A lot of Disney Fans don’t like change, and don’t want any of our classic attractions altered in any way. I get that way too at times. However, the new additions to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad do not really affect the actual ride, or track, it’s the queue while waiting in line.
Just as the Haunted Mansion had a renovation in their waiting area, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is getting the same type of thing. While waiting in line, guests will be involved in a type of story. It’s actually based on the backstory of Barnabas T. Bullion, founder and president of Big Thunder Mining Company. Disney wants to create an illusion of being an actual Miner, just like in the days of the Wild West. The story will take you through the Mining Office, the Explosives Magazine Room, and an oxygen area. They want you to feel like you’re actually seeing what it was like to be a miner back in the day. There’s also a really fun interactive area where guests can look into a viewer and actually see inside the mine. From the photos I’ve seen, it looks really nice.
I usually don’t like too many changes, I like things to stay the same for the most part at Disney. However, I think adding sights to see and interactive areas to attractions while waiting in line is a good thing. We don’t always have a fastpass, and even if we do, it doesn’t necessarily mean we will get on the ride right away. Distractions make time go by faster, and also creates memories for you and your family. It’s almost like an attraction inside an attraction, if that makes sense! Disney Imagineers are planning to take a look at other rides, to see where else they can update the waiting queue. It will be interesting to see where the next updates will be.
The new interactive queue for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be open in a few weeks. I’d love to hear what you think, if you get to see it when it opens. I do hope it makes waiting in line a bit more fun for everyone!
