We’ve talked about security at Disney Parks a lot in the past few weeks, and now it looks as if Disney has taken it a step further. As of first thing this morning, metal detectors were being added to the entrance of the Magic Kingdom.
Update: Metal detectors have been installed at all Walt Disney World Parks and the parks at Disneyland. Magic Kingdom guests are being randomly selected to go through the scanners, and all guests with bags are still going through bag check. The same random screening scan process has been put in place at all of Disney’s stateside parks. Guests will also see an increase in police working dogs in and around Disney parks. It was confirmed that Universal Studios, and Sea World parks have also added metal detectors at their gates as of this morning.
From our on the scene reporter Susanne~ There are 3 total metal detectors and looked to be manned by an event staff company. I asked and this is the first day for them, not everyone has to go through so select people. I talked to a ‘white shirt’ Cast Member about it. He said the detectors will be permanent. He confirmed that it will be ‘RSP’ or random screening process. He said there are tons of additional security measures they have taken to ensure safety but this is a more visible one. He said you’d have to have your head buried in the sand if you didn’t think this could be a potential target. I still haven’t seen anyone gone through them yet.
We thank Susanne for the information and will be watching for more updates as we see them, so stay tuned to TMSM for more!
UPDATE: Other security features being implemented are the stopping of selling toy guns, including squirt guns. Also, guests 14 and over will no longer be able to wear costumes in the parks.
The new updated dress code rules state:
Attire that is not appropriate for the parks—and which may result in refusal of admittance—includes but is not limited to:
- Costumes may not be worn by Guests 14 years of age or older
- Masks may not be worn by Guests 14 years of age or older (unless they are for medical purposes)
- Clothing with objectionable material, including obscene language or graphics
- Excessively torn clothing
- Clothing which, by nature, exposes excessive portions of the skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment
- Clothing with multiple layers are subject to search upon entry
- Objectionable tattoos

I will put up with the added Security anywhere, better safe than sorry. Also you cannot believe how much some toy guns & real guns look alike. The metal detectors are always interesting for me, both knees have been replaced & now I have metal in my ankle also. I am a hoot getting past the airport security, but that’s OK.
Makes me sad that the happiest place on earth is having to have a reality check. It’s for the best though.
I think this is great! I wouldn’t mind it taking longer to get in if I know it is for our safety.
It’s just too bad that this is the world we now live in.
I will gladly stand in longer lines for added security. Disney is just making sure we are safe and that is all that matters.
We went by MK Sunday and were at MK on Tuesday. Several Sheriff’s cars, K9 cars, etc. out in front. I suppose they were preparing for the extra security due to the man trying to take a pistol in last Friday.
