“The Brave Little Toaster” is based on the book The Brave Little Toaster: A Bedtime Story For Small Appliances by Thomas M. Disch. The movie tells the story of Toaster, Radio, Lampy, Blanky; and Kirby who live in a cabin and are owned by Rob (their human.) The story focuses on their adventures as they leave their log cabin home in search of Rob, and ultimately their return to the cabin after an appliance store owner finds them and tries to take apart Toaster for parts. Unbeknownst to the appliances, Rob lives in an apartment in the city, and is on his way to come and retrieve them. When the appliances arrive at the new apartment, the new appliances that are already there try and dispose of them, but the TV in the apartment sends Rob to Ernie’s Disposal where he is once again reunited with the gang.
Popular actors who voiced characters in “The Brave Little Toaster” include Jon Lovitz (Radio), Phil Hartman (Air Conditioner/Hanging Lamp), Tim Stack (Lampy), Judy Toll (Mish-Mash), and Mindy Sterling (Rob’s mother). It’s international premiere on 7/13/89 was held at the Wadsworth Theatre in Los Angeles. It was also the first animated film ever exhibited at Sundance, and until it held that honor until 2001. “The Brave Little Toaster” won the Parent’s Choice Award in 1988, and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program and at for the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, Dramatic. It has two direct to video sequels “The Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue ” and “The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars”.
