River Country ~ Gone but not forgotten

On this date, back in 2005, Walt Disney World made the official announcement that its first water park, River Country, would remain closed permanently. River Country was opened in 1976, and had stopped operating in November of 2001. River Country was themed around a rustic old-fashioned swimming hole with a theme similar to Thunder Mountain and Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom. River Country had sandy bottom pools with water pumped in from Bay Lake, and a list of water slide attractions for just about anyone. Although the property was a bit smaller than the current water parks, Typhoon Lagoon & Blizzard Beach, River Country still had a decent amount of attractions. Here’s the rundown:

  • Whoop ‘n’ Holler Hollow, two water slides, 260 ft (79 m) and 160 ft (49 m) long that emptied into Bay Cove
