Marvel has become one of the biggest parts of the San Diego Comic Con over the last few years. Everybody starts wondering for weeks before, what will Marvel do exactly? What announcements will come out? Who will show up?? If you recall from last year, one of my personal highlights from the con was when Loki showed up in Hall H and asked, “Where are your Avengers now?” From the crowd chanting his name over and over, it was an awesome sight to see.
Now for those of you who are not aware, Hall H is the biggest room at the San Diego Comic Con. Fans wait in line for hours and hours before a panel in hopes of getting in. It’s understandable why, this is the hall where we were introduced to the cast of The Avengers. Hall H is know for where all the big movie panels will take place, just not Marvel, but for the last few years Marvel has dominated this room. With the Guardians of the Galaxy due out in just a few days, The Avengers: Age of Ultron filming going on and due out in May, Ant-Man due out next year and this past week Marvel putting out the release days for the films of Phase 3, but not telling us which films. There is so much to cover, and the con isn’t over yet.
So what has big things have come out from Marvel in Hall H on Saturday?
Well first up was the Ant-Man. The film that is due out July 17, 2015. Evangeline Lilly and Corey Stoll were officially introduced on stage as part of the film. Lilly will be playing Hope Pym, the daughter of Michael Douglas’s character Hank Pym. Stoll will play Darren Cross, a colleague of Pym’s who obtains Pym particles and dons the villainous mantle of Yellowjacket. Paul Rudd is the star of the film and will play the character of Scott Lang.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige mentioned that production kicks off August 18 in Atlanta, but he did have a very polished-looking clip from the film. During the introduction of the clip, Feige credited the Ant-Man team “Thanks to Peyton, thanks to Paul, thanks to Michael and the visual effects team,” he said. He made no mention of Edgar Wright, who recently was replaced as Director by Peyton Reed.
In the footage, Rudd in the Ant-Man suit jumps on a flying insect that Hank Pym, via voice-over, is telling him to control. “Paul is in great shape that the Ant-Man body suit, we had to soften up,” said Reed. “We’re actually using CGI to remove muscles.”
“This is a story of a heist and my partner played by Corey Stoll is taking the company in a different direction,” Douglas said. Added Stoll: ”Some judgmental people says it’s an evil direction.”
Next was the part I personally was waiting to hear about, The Avengers: Age of Ultron panel. The Avengers assembled on stage to talk about Age of Ultron that is due out in May 2015. There were 12 people there to talk about the film. Missing were Joss Whedon who is recovering after just having knee surgery in the UK and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) who had to take some time out to bring a baby into the world.
During The Avengers panel they showed some footage of a party where The Avengers are all trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. None of them are even able to budge his hammer, but Steve “Captain America” Rogers who moved it just a bit.
The next scene showed one of the older Iron Man suits, possessed by Ultron. “You want to protect the world but you don’t want it to change,” he says, “There’s only one path to peace. Your extinction.”
They also gave a brief shot of The Hulk vs. Iron Man in the “Hulkbuster” armour and Ultron in his final form. At the end, a shot of Tony Stark looking over the battleground, and the rest of The Avengers beaten down. They all are bruised and battered at this point, but all ok.
The last thing in regards to The Avengers that was made official, even though most fans knew it already, Josh Brolin will voice the villain character Thanos. We haven’t seen Thanos since the “after the credits” scene after The Avengers in 2012.
Now one last final announcement and one that a lot knew was coming but didn’t know when was Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will come out on July 28, 2017.
What a very exciting day in Hall H for Marvel fans. I know I can’t wait for the Guardians to debut on August 1st. I have been waiting for this movie since I first heard it was coming. Then it will begin the countdown till The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The first Avengers film is easily one of my favorite films of all time. One thing that was not talked about was the Doctor Strange film. There are rumors floating out there that Joaquin Phoenix is the current name to play the character but not confirmed. I’m sure once confirmation comes out we will have an announcement. We still have today also at the con, so who knows what will happen.
The Marvel films just seem to continue to get better and better and I have no doubt that will continue with the end of Phase 2 and throughout Phase 3.
