If this were to become reality, Depp would play the Master of the Mystic Arts, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics vets Stan Lee and Steve Ditko co-created the character in 1963. It would surely be a showy role that Depp could disappear into and make his own like he did with “Pirates of the Caribbean’s” Jack Sparrow and “Alice in Wonderland’s” Mad Hatter.
The one thing that would be on the side of such a rumor, is that the Marvel calendar is pretty full for the next few years and Johnny is pretty busy so it would be a few years away. Also, Doctor Strange is a film that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has wanted. With the path that the cinematic universe is going, a Doctor Strange film could fit in down the road. I guess time will only tell, but it’s fun to think of Johnny joining the Marvel universe as such a great character. I could only imagine the life he would bring to the Doctor on the big screen.
As of right now there is no confirmation of anything with this rumor. Marvel has a way of keeping very tight lips on anything, for instance until Marvel officially announced Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, it was heavily denied by the actor and the studio. If more information comes about with this rumor we will be sure to pass along any information we may find or hear.
