Houdini: Back from the Dead Uses AI to Bring the Legendary Illusionist to Life

October 8, 2026

Here at The Main Street Mouse, Disney will always be home. But we’re also working to bring you more stories from outside the Disney bubble, especially the ones we think you’ll want to talk about. This is one of those stories.

I’ve been a fan of Harry Houdini for as long as I can remember, and I’ve read just about everything I can find on his life. So when I saw that a new series is bringing Houdini “back” to tell his own story, and that it was made with AI, it immediately caught my attention.

What Is Houdini: Back from the Dead?

Fox Nation, Fox News’ streaming service, will debut Houdini: Back from the Dead, a three part series, on October 14. The timing is intentional. October 31, 2026 marks 100 years since Houdini’s death on Halloween 1926.

The series tells Houdini’s life story through his own “words,” covering his difficult childhood, which included a violent accident and strained relationships with his family, all the way to the daring escapes that made him one of the most famous performers in the world.

Here’s the twist: an AI generated version of Houdini appears like a documentary subject, answering questions about his life directly to the camera.

How Much of It Is Actually AI?

This is where it gets interesting, and where I think a lot of people will have strong opinions. The series isn’t simply typed into a computer and spit out. According to Variety, the production by Red Rock Films combined real research and human work with AI:

  • Real photos and footage: The team used more than 400 licensed photographs and archival footage.
  • Human actors: Actors played Houdini’s wife Bess, his mother, his brother, his friends and others, and AI was then used to transform them into the real historical figures.
  • Human writers: The scripts were written by people, drawing on Houdini’s diaries, books and letters.
  • Fact checking: Historical details were verified by experts and research.
  • A mix of voices: The voices are a combination of human and AI generated.

It’s the first time Fox News has stepped into fully AI generated content, something most news organizations have chosen to stay away from.

Fox Nation president Lauren Petterson said the series breaks “new creative ground by using emerging technology to bring one of history’s most fascinating figures to life for a modern audience.”

“We’re proud to showcase a new form of historical storytelling that allows viewers to experience Houdini’s remarkable life in his own words, while remaining rooted in extensive research and historical accuracy,” she said.

Why Houdini Is the Perfect Subject for This Debate

Houdini Back from the Dead

For anyone who knows Houdini’s story, there’s something almost poetic about this.

Houdini spent much of his later life exposing fake spiritualists and mediums who claimed they could contact the dead. He knew every trick in the book, and he made it his mission to show audiences how they were being fooled. After his death, his wife Bess famously held séances for years, hoping he would send her a message from the other side. He never did.

Now, 100 years later, Houdini is “speaking” again, not through a séance, but through technology. I can’t decide if he would have been fascinated by it or would have made it his next target to expose. Knowing Houdini, maybe both.

What Do You Think?

AI in entertainment is one of the biggest debates in Hollywood right now. Some see it as a powerful new way to bring history to life, while others worry about what it means for actors, artists and the truth itself.

So I’m curious where you stand:

Would you watch an AI recreation of a historical figure like Houdini? Is this a creative new way to tell history, or a line that shouldn’t be crossed?

Let us know in the comments.
