Meta just gave us a glimpse at the future of virtual reality, and it includes a little Disney magic.
At Meta Connect 2026, the company officially announced its long-awaited Meta VR Glasses, a sleek, next-generation headset that the company calls the beginning of a new era for virtual reality. Priced at $1,299 and set to ship in Spring 2027, these glasses are unlike anything Meta has released before.
A Headset That Actually Looks Like Glasses
The most striking thing about the Meta VR Glasses is how light they are. At just 100 grams, the headset achieves that slim profile by offloading all of the computing power to a separate tethered puck powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chip with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (expandable via microSD). That split design is a dramatic departure from the Quest line, which packs everything into the headset itself.
The frame is built from magnesium alloy with pancake lenses, giving it a premium feel that lives up to its premium price.
Stunning Visuals, Premium Audio
The display situation here is impressive. The Meta VR Glasses feature dual micro-OLED screens running at 120Hz with a resolution of 2,412 x 2,288 per eye. The headset supports Dolby Vision HDR and is IMAX Enhanced certified, which pairs nicely with Dolby Atmos audio built right in. Meta is billing this as a true cinematic experience in spatial computing form.
Games, Apps, and Disney Immersive Cinema
At launch, the headset will support 75 hand-gesture-controlled games, Beat Saber with a brand new Flux mode, and the full Quest library. Xbox Cloud Gaming is also supported for those who want to game via the cloud.
Here is where it gets exciting for Disney fans. The Meta VR Glasses will feature Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM at launch, bringing enhanced versions of Avengers films and Star Wars classics into the headset. That kind of exclusive content partnership signals that Meta is positioning these glasses not just as a gaming device but as a full entertainment platform.
Staying Connected in Spatial Reality
The Meta VR Glasses also support holographic avatars for WhatsApp and Zoom calls, and can connect to Windows PCs and Macs via USB-C DisplayPort. Passthrough mixed reality is included with 26 pixels per degree color quality, and a four-camera eye tracking system rounds out the input options alongside hand tracking and optional Touch Plus controllers.
The Bigger Picture
The Meta VR Glasses sit at the top of a four-device ecosystem that ranges from $249 audio glasses all the way up to this flagship spatial computing solution. Meta is clearly trying to build a full product ladder for different types of users, from casual to committed.
