If you have been following Florida transportation news, you have probably heard the big news this week; Brightline is reportedly preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and a lot of Disney guests are understandably wondering what this means for their travel plans.
Here is everything you need to know.
What Is Happening With Brightline?
Brightline, the privately operated passenger rail service connecting South Florida cities, is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as soon as this week. The company is looking to restructure approximately $1.1 billion in corporate debt, with total company debt sitting around $5.5 billion. Brightline has already secured a restructuring support agreement that includes at least $350 million in new financing to keep the company moving forward through the process.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy is a reorganization bankruptcy, not a shutdown. It allows companies to restructure their debt while continuing to operate. Think of it as a financial reset rather than a closure.
Will Trains Keep Running?
Yes — and this is the most important thing for Disney travelers to know right now. According to reports, the bankruptcy filing will specifically exclude Brightline’s operating unit. That means trains continue running on normal schedules, booked tickets remain valid, and daily passenger service is not going anywhere.
So if you have a trip to Disney World or a Disney Cruise coming up and you planned to take Brightline, your plans are safe as things stand today.
What About Disney Cruise Line Guests?
For guests sailing out of PortMiami or Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, nothing changes. Brightline currently connects to both of those ports via its MiamiCentral and Fort Lauderdale stations, and service continues uninterrupted.
The bigger concern involves Port Canaveral, which is the departure point for many Disney Cruise Line sailings. There is currently no direct Brightline access to Port Canaveral, but a Cocoa station was in development that would have placed passengers about 10 miles from the cruise port. That project received $57.5 million in funding as recently as August 2026, but no opening date has ever been announced.
With the bankruptcy filing, the future of that Cocoa station expansion is now uncertain. Companies going through restructuring tend to reassess capital projects, and an unfinished expansion with no firm timeline is exactly the kind of thing that can get paused or cancelled. Nothing has been officially cut, but it is something to keep a close eye on.
What Should Disney Guests Do?
If you have an upcoming trip, there is no need to panic or change your plans. Current Brightline service is protected throughout the restructuring process. Just keep an eye on any future updates regarding the Cocoa station project if you are a Disney Cruise Line guest hoping to one day take the train to Port Canaveral.
