Disney+ and Hulu just announced a major expansion of their video podcast slate, with the library set to double in the coming months. And with some of the titles already dropping, there is a lot to get excited about right now.
What Are Video Podcasts on Disney+ and Hulu?
Disney launched its video podcast initiative about a year ago, pairing shows like Only Murders in the Building, Dancing with the Stars, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Murdaugh: Death in the Family with companion podcast experiences. The idea is simple: if you love a show, you can go deeper into it through an accompanying podcast that lives right inside the same app you are already watching in.
The results have been impressive. About 90% of viewers who watched the Tell Me Lies companion podcast went on to complete every single episode of Season 3. That is a remarkable engagement number, and it clearly has Disney and Hulu leaning further into the format in a big way.
What Is Available Right Now?
Two new Headgum podcasts are now available exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu before hitting other platforms. Best Friends is a weekly hangout podcast from comedians Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata, and Perfect Person features Miles Bonsignore tackling listener dilemmas. Both are fun, personality driven shows that fit perfectly alongside the rest of the streaming content.
ABC News is also adding a new true crime offering to the mix. The Scream Murder: A True Teen Horror Story Podcast is a 6-part series hosted by Pat Rogers and Conor McCarthy, covering the killing of Idaho teenager Cassie Stoddart and featuring previously unreleased material.
What Is Coming Soon?
The lineup for the next few weeks is packed, and there is something for just about everyone:
On September 24, FX’s American Horror Story Official Podcast arrives on Hulu, which is perfectly timed for the Halloween season. On October 1, the fan favorite Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald lands on Hulu, along with a very timely Halloweentown episode of the Disney+ Hulu Throwbacks Podcast that is sure to bring back some serious nostalgic memories. November 2 brings Desperately Devoted to Hulu as well.
The Biggest Launch Yet
Of all the video podcasts Disney and Hulu have released so far, the Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast holds the record as the number one launch to date based on first week global views. Given how devoted the Star Wars fanbase is, that probably comes as no surprise. Other top performers include the Paradise companion podcast on Hulu, the Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette podcast from FX, and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians podcast on Disney+.
The video podcast format is a smart move by Disney. Fans who are already invested in a series become even more engaged when there is additional companion content that goes deeper into the stories and characters they love. And by keeping these shows exclusive to Disney+ and Hulu before they hit other platforms, it gives subscribers another reason to stay inside the Disney ecosystem.
