There are feel-good stories and then there are stories like this one. Disney Cruise Line and Make-A-Wish Ireland came together in Cork, Ireland for a first-of-its-kind event aboard the Disney Dream, welcoming more than 30 wish children and their families for a day of magic that none of them will ever forget.
A Day Unlike Any Other
The experience began the evening before with a welcome celebration featuring Joy and Sadness from Inside Out, setting the tone for everything that was to come. Once aboard the Disney Dream, families were greeted personally in the ship’s atrium and treated to a Royal Palace brunch with some of the most beloved Disney Princesses around — Cinderella, Rapunzel, Tiana, and Belle. The day also included arts and crafts, a visit with Stitch in Oceaneer Club, and a silent disco dance party with none other than Mickey Mouse himself.
Each child went home with special keepsakes including plush toys, pins, and autograph books tangible reminders of a day built entirely around them.
The Stories That Make It Real
Numbers tell part of the story, but the real heart of this event lives in the children themselves.
Ella Leavy wished to meet Disney characters, with Minnie Mouse at the top of her list. Her parents shared that so much of Ella’s childhood had been taken up by medical appointments and surgeries, making an experience like this one all the more meaningful. For Ella, a day filled with characters, magic, and joy was exactly what she deserved.
Then there is Tyler, who wished to meet Mickey Mouse and got something even better a dance with Captain Mickey Mouse aboard the ship. It is the kind of moment that is impossible to fully describe but impossible to forget.
What the Partnership Means
Tracy Wilson, Senior Vice President of Disney Cruise Line, put the mission simply and perfectly: “We have the unique opportunity to bring Disney stories directly to these families.”
Make-A-Wish Ireland CEO Susan O’Dwyer added: “This event gave our wish families a wonderful opportunity to have fun, build lasting memories.”
The partnership between Disney and Make-A-Wish stretches back more than 45 years, during which time more than 175,000 wishes have been granted. Disney Cruise Line alone has granted nearly 6,000 wishes since 2010. Make-A-Wish Ireland has been changing lives since 1992 and granted 229 wishes in 2025 alone, bringing its total to more than 3,700.
This first-ever joint event in Ireland is a natural extension of that legacy — and one that will hopefully become a regular tradition.
For Disney fans, moments like this are a reminder of what the company is capable of at its best. The parks and cruises and films are wonderful, but the ability to take a child who has been through more than any child should have to face and give them one perfect day surrounded by their favorite characters — that is something else entirely. That is the Disney magic that matters most.
