Rush Does Not Want a Cheap Return
Geoffrey Rush has made it clear that he has real reservations about bringing Barbossa back in any straightforward way. His reasoning comes from a place of genuine respect for the character’s journey. At the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Barbossa made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life for his daughter. Rush feels that simply undoing that moment would cheapen everything the character went through across five movies.
In his own words: “I sacrificed my life for my daughter. You can’t just suddenly go, ‘We’re gonna bring him back.'”
That is a pretty clear stance, and it speaks to how seriously Rush took the role over the years.
From Villain to Legend
What makes Barbossa such a compelling character is how much he grew from the first film to the last. When he debuted in the original 2003 Pirates of the Caribbean, he was essentially a one-dimensional antagonist a ruthless pirate captain with a curse to break. But over the course of five films, the character evolved into something far more layered, eventually becoming one of the most memorable figures in the entire franchise.
Rush has credited fight choreographer Bob Anderson with shaping a lot of that energy. Anderson told Rush early on: “You kick sand into people’s eyes. You force them off the edge of a cliff.” That unprincipled, anything-goes philosophy became the backbone of how Barbossa moved and fought throughout the series.
The Ghost Loophole
Here is where things get interesting. Rush has not completely closed the door. He proposed a very specific scenario where Barbossa could return as a ghost, drawing a comparison to Hamlet’s father in Shakespeare’s classic play. It is a creative solution that would honor the character’s death while still allowing him to appear on screen. Whether Disney and the producers would go that route remains to be seen.
What About Johnny Depp?
The reboot question cannot be answered without at least touching on Jack Sparrow, and Rush has thoughts there too. He described Johnny Depp’s performance as irreplaceable, calling Jack Sparrow “the new Robert Newton” — a reference to the actor who essentially invented the modern pirate archetype in classic Hollywood films. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed the reboot is moving forward but has said it will not continue the storylines of the previous films. Depp’s return remains uncertain despite ongoing studio interest.
What This Means for Fans
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has one of the most passionate fan bases in Disney history, and the prospect of a reboot without Barbossa or Jack Sparrow is going to sit differently with different people. Rush clearly cares about doing right by the character, and his ghost idea is genuinely intriguing. Whether the new film honors that legacy or charts a completely fresh course, it is a conversation worth watching closely.
