It’s almost the spooky season and Freeform just put out their lineup for this year’s 31 Nights of Halloween! On our weekly podcast recording last night, we went over the list and I saw a new show on the roster, Coven Academy. So what is that? Coven Academy is on day 1 of Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween and officially premiering on Disney+ October 2, bringing a little supernatural fun to this year’s Halloween lineup.
Set inside a secret school in New Orleans, the series follows a group of young witches and warlocks as they learn to control their newfound powers while facing a mysterious force that’s closing in. It makes sense that this series is debuting in October as it of course goes with the theme.
While I was getting info on this new series, I came across something a bit interesting. Apparently, not everyone is happy that Disney is doing a series about witchcraft.
Disney’s upcoming series “Coven Academy” is already getting some pushback before it even premieres. The parental advocacy group One Million Moms is warning parents about the new show, claiming it promotes witchcraft to kids and teens.
In an online alert, the group criticized Disney for what it says is an ongoing focus on witches, warlocks and sorcery, along with what it describes as secular values being aimed at younger viewers. The group refers to “Coven Academy” as a teen drama or “teen soap opera.” OMM said the show’s trailer features teenagers with anger issues, a witch sisterhood theme, teen romance and vampires. The group’s asking folks to sign a pledge saying they won’t support Disney or “Coven Academy.” After they sign, they want people to pass the alert along by email and on social media.
That’s a lot to unpack, right? I’m not familiar with the mom group so please excuse that part. I completely see their point, if they do not want their children watching this new show. I was alway particular about what my kids watched too, but to a point. For example, Hocus Pocus was a staple in our household during the month of October, which is of course about witches. They also watched Wizards of Waverly Place. I never thought about that as being a bad thing as it was just fantasy and entertainment. Of course, there were other programs and movies that were a definite no! As a mom, I’d say for parents to use discretion on how you feel and what you’d like your kids to see. Regardless of what the programming is! Maybe wait until Coven Academy premieres to make that decision? You can see for yourself when Coven Academy airs its first episode on October 1st on Freeform and the following day on Hulu and Disney+.
