If you’ve ever been amazed by a Star Wars lightsaber battle, a Jurassic Park dinosaur, or the sweeping world of the MCU, then you already know the work of Industrial Light & Magic, even if you didn’t realize it. The legendary visual effects studio founded by George Lucas has been shaping the way we experience movies and entertainment for over 50 years, and their story is one of the most remarkable in Hollywood history.

Born Out of Necessity
In May 1975, George Lucas — the filmmaker who would go on to become a Disney Legend — had a problem. He was ready to make his ambitious space opera, but no special effects company in Hollywood was capable of bringing his vision to life. Rather than scale back his dream, he did something extraordinary: he built his own studio.
Lucas founded Industrial Light & Magic, bringing in camera expert John Dykstra along with a team of artists, builders, and visionaries to set up shop in a converted warehouse in Van Nuys, California. Their mission? To create the effects for Star Wars (1977) — a film that would not only become one of the greatest movies ever made, but would completely reshape the entire film industry.
As Janet Lewin, SVP and General Manager of ILM, puts it simply: “ILM was founded out of necessity. There is no Star Wars without ILM — and there is no ILM without Star Wars.”
A Legacy of Groundbreaking Innovation

What started as a scrappy group of problem-solvers in a warehouse has grown into one of the most celebrated creative companies in the world. Today, ILM is headquartered in San Francisco with studios in five countries, and the list of films they’ve helped bring to life reads like a greatest hits of cinema.
Over more than five decades, ILM has won an astonishing 16 Academy Awards®, 17 BAFTA Awards, and eight Emmy® Awards, among countless other honors. They pioneered the transition from practical visual effects to digital technology, and have continued to push boundaries in feature animation, virtual production, immersive entertainment, and beyond.
From the original Star Wars trilogy to the Indiana Jones franchise, Jurassic Park, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and far beyond, ILM’s fingerprints are on some of the most iconic moments in entertainment history.
The Minds Behind the Magic
In a new video shared by D23, ILM leadership opens up about the company’s extraordinary journey. Alongside Lewin, viewers hear from John Knoll, Executive Creative Director at ILM, and Doug Chiang, SVP and Executive Design Director at Lucasfilm — two of the creative minds who have helped carry ILM’s legacy forward and continue to define what’s possible in visual storytelling.
For Disney fans especially, the story of ILM is deeply intertwined with the stories we love. From Star Wars to Indiana Jones to the worlds of Marvel, ILM has been the invisible hand behind the magic for generations — and it all started with one filmmaker who refused to take no for an answer.
