Shaquille O’Neal has been one of the most vocal celebrity fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, and it turns out he did more than just talk about wanting in. Shaq actively lobbied to join the Avengers, and Marvel actually responded. The answer was no, and the reason they gave him is pretty hard to argue with.

According to O’Neal, Marvel executives were completely straightforward about it. Their explanation: “Shaq, we love you and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen, people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!'” The 54-year-old Hall of Famer acknowledged the point himself, saying simply: “I guess my face is too bigtime.” It is hard to disagree. The concern from studio leadership was that O’Neal’s overwhelming celebrity presence would pull audiences right out of the story, even in a smaller role. When you are one of the most recognizable human beings on the planet, blending into the background of a superhero ensemble is a tall order, even for someone who is literally seven feet tall.
O’Neal’s interest in Marvel goes back at least to 2018, when he told Entertainment Weekly he wanted to fight Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man on screen. He even floated the idea of playing Thanos as a backup plan. This was not a casual fan fantasy either. He kept the campaign going publicly for years, and the Variety exclusive that broke this story confirms his lobbying never actually resulted in a formal offer from the studio. It puts a definitive end to years of speculation about whether Shaq might one day show up in the MCU.

It is worth remembering that O’Neal is no stranger to the superhero genre. He played John Henry Irons in DC’s 1997 film Steel, though that one did not exactly set the box office on fire. His entertainment ambitions have not slowed down since then: he has been working as a Turner Sports broadcast analyst and recently partnered with Archie Comics on an original comic book series called Vengeance Unchained: The Legend of Black Caesar. And his MCU dreams may not be fully dead either. His persistent nature suggests he is not the type to take no for a final answer, and with Dwayne Johnson now a Disney Legend and a growing part of the Marvel universe, a Shaq and Rock team-up somewhere down the line is not the craziest idea in the world.

What do you think: should Marvel find a way to get Shaq into the MCU anyway? Let us know in the comments!
