One of Walt Disney World’s most legendary creatures is preparing to move again.

During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa, Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum delivered an announcement fans have waited years to hear: Disney is bringing the Yeti back to life inside Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

The surprise announcement was made on the “Horizons: A Carousel of Progress” stage after Mazloum interrupted host Neil Patrick Harris with news big enough to shake the Forbidden Mountain.

The Yeti Will Rise Again

The Yeti has always been the centerpiece of Expedition Everest’s story, but longtime fans know that the enormous Audio-Animatronic has not operated with its originally intended movements for many years.

Disney has now officially confirmed plans to bring the legendary creature back to life. The announcement was met with huge cheers from the D23 audience, demonstrating just how important the Yeti remains to Disney Parks fans.

Disney did not reveal when the work will begin, whether Expedition Everest will need to close temporarily, or precisely what movements and effects will be restored. More details are expected to be announced as the project develops.

Gloria Gaynor Gives the Dancing Yeti a Send-Off

Disney made sure the Yeti’s current era received a memorable farewell.

Following the announcement, disco legend Gloria Gaynor appeared onstage to perform her 1978 hit “I Will Survive.” The performance served as an appropriately playful tribute to the creature that fans have affectionately associated with dancing and flashing lights during its years of limited movement.

It was a dramatic send-off for the Yeti as Disney prepares to write the next chapter of Expedition Everest’s history.

The Legend at the Heart of Expedition Everest

Expedition Everest is built around the mystery of a fearsome Yeti said to guard the Forbidden Mountain.

The story begins long before guests board the attraction. Throughout the detailed queue, visitors explore a trailside museum containing artifacts and supposed evidence of the creature’s existence.

The displays include sketches of alleged sightings, signs of attacks on mountain camps, artifacts connected to local legends, and even a cast of a gigantic Yeti footprint. Together, these details gradually transform the attraction from a simple railway expedition into a journey through forbidden territory.

Guests eventually board an old tea train and begin climbing the mountain. The higher the train travels, the more evidence riders encounter that something powerful does not want them there.

A High-Speed Encounter With the Guardian of the Mountain

The expedition takes a frightening turn when guests discover that the railway tracks have been torn apart.

With the train unable to continue, riders are sent backward through the darkness before racing across the mountain in an attempt to escape its legendary guardian. The final close encounter with the massive Yeti is designed to be the dramatic culmination of the attraction’s story.

The nearly 200-foot Forbidden Mountain was inspired by the northwest face of Mount Everest, along with geological and architectural elements found throughout Tibet and Nepal. Its enormous scale, detailed storytelling, and thrilling ride system have helped make Expedition Everest one of the defining attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Why the Yeti Announcement Matters

The return of the Yeti represents more than a technical update to a single attraction. The creature is essential to the story Imagineers created for Expedition Everest.

Every detail in the queue, from the damaged campsites to the footprint mold, builds anticipation for the moment guests finally encounter the guardian of the mountain. Restoring more life to the Yeti could make that climactic meeting feel more powerful for both longtime fans and first-time riders.

The project also demonstrates Disney’s willingness to revisit an existing attraction and restore one of its most famous show elements rather than allowing it to remain in its current form.

Disney has not announced a reopening timeline for the restored Yeti or explained how the work could affect Expedition Everest’s operating schedule. Until those details are released, guests should not assume that an attraction closure has been scheduled.

What Disney has confirmed, however, is enough to generate tremendous excitement: the guardian of the Forbidden Mountain is being prepared for a comeback.

After years of waiting, Expedition Everest fans will finally get another chance to experience the Yeti brought back to life—and the mountain may never be the same again.
