It seem’s Disney’s new animated film “Wish” did not take off for the company this past Thanksgiving weekend. In fact, it has actually become one of Disney’s worst box office openings ever.
“Wish” is another of Disney’s recent short comings at the box office as the company continues to see poor reviews and poor turn out in movie houses for their recent releases. The film debuted in third place at the box office this past weekend at $19.5 million–this is well below projections of what is was hoped to make over its three-day domestic opening. The film made $31.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend period.
Only days before the film’s release, it was projected to make roughly $50 million during its five-day domestic opening as the film cost $200 million to produce.
Deadline has attributed the film’s poor performance at the box office to its trailer, which they stated does not make the plot of the film clear, and its premise, which is considered a “plug-and-play princess movie” with the “silly sidekicks (a talking goat and puffy star)”, which they say is a common theme of other Disney animated films.
As shared by Forbes, “Wish” fell behind the opening weekend gross of nearly ever other film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, only surpassing the openings of “Strange World” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” which were also considered flops at the box office.
Here is the official synopsis of the film from Disney:
In “Wish,” Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
