Following the announcement that Dr. Seuss Enterprises has announced the company will stop publishing and licensing six of the famed author’s books because they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Universal Orlando is now evaluating whether or not the theme park resort wants to keep the Dr. Seuss-themed area in its Islands of Adventure theme park.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced the pulling of books from shelves Tuesday, on the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel — best known as Dr. Seuss. The company said it made the decision last year after working with a panel of experts and educators and reviewing its catalog.
“Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprise’s catalog represents and supports all communities and families,” the statement read.
Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park has an entire area themed after the classic book series named Seuss Landing. In this land are two attractions that come from two of the books that Dr. Seuss Enterprises has decided to discontinue selling.
One includes a play area themed after “If I Ran the Zoo,” which was criticized because of its portrayal of Asian people. The theme park land also features a Mulberry Street Store, which comes from “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” another book being pulled from shelves.
In a recent report by Spectrum News, Universal Orlando commented to the news outlet, saying:
“Seuss Landing continues to be very popular with our guests and we value our relationship with Seuss Enterprises,” a Universal spokesperson said in a statement. “We’ve removed the books from our shelves as they have asked and we’ll be evaluating our in-park experience too. But our guests can plan on continuing to be able to enjoy their favorite experiences at Seuss Landing.”
