The world of Zootopia is preparing to spread its wings.

zootopia 3 Will Welcome Birds As Disney Animation Expands the Mammal Metropolis

Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially placed Zootopia 3 into early development, with the next installment set to introduce birds into the franchise’s ever-expanding animal metropolis. The announcement was made during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August.

The Genie Transportation Services

Jared Bush, chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, shared the news with thousands of fans inside the Honda Center. He was joined by members of the franchise’s cast and creative team, including Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan.

While story details remain under wraps, the filmmakers confirmed that the arrival of birds will have significant implications for Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and the larger world of Zootopia.

Ginnifer Goodwin Reacts to the Announcement

Goodwin, who has voiced Judy Hopps since the original Zootopia arrived in 2016, became emotional while watching the enthusiastic response from fans.

“I just can’t believe my luck that we get to keep telling this story,” Goodwin said after describing the excitement she saw on the faces of her children, who were sitting in the front row during the announcement.

The actress already has ideas about what birds could bring to the franchise. Goodwin said she has been texting members of the creative team with random thoughts and observations about her own relationship with birds that could potentially find their way into the movie.

A Feather Teased What Was Coming Next

The introduction of birds should not come as a complete surprise to fans who remained through the credits of Zootopia 2.

The 2025 sequel concluded with a feather floating onto Judy’s windowsill, offering the first clue about where the story might go next. During D23, Bush showed attendees an exclusive extended sequence confirming that birds will play a major part in Zootopia 3.

“The idea of bringing birds into this world is something that we’ve been excited about for years,” Bush said.

According to Bush, the filmmakers are interested in exploring what the presence of birds will mean for Nick, Judy, and the entire city. He called those consequences the movie’s “fun surprise.”

Bush also wants the upcoming film to balance familiar faces with ideas audiences have not seen before. Although the team hopes to bring back many of the franchise’s popular characters, the next adventure will continue pushing Zootopia into new territory.

Ke Huy Quan Hopes Gary Makes Some Feathered Friends

Ke Huy Quan, who voices Gary De’Snake, does not yet know what the new movie has planned for his character. However, he is eager to return to the recording booth and play the good-natured pit viper again.

Birds and snakes are often natural enemies, which could create an interesting dynamic for Gary in the next installment. Quan hopes the birds will eventually look past Gary’s intimidating appearance and recognize his friendly personality.

“The birds might be afraid of him because he’s a pit viper,” Quan said, adding that he would like to see them become friends once they discover who Gary really is.

Quan’s comments represent his hopes for the story rather than confirmed plot details, so fans will need to wait to discover how Gary fits into the birds’ arrival.

Zootopia’s World Keeps Getting Bigger

Yvett Merino, who produced Zootopia 2, believes the franchise offers endless storytelling opportunities because its animal society reflects situations and relationships found in the real world.

Subverting expectations about how different species interact is one of the reasons she is excited to return.

Clark Spencer, president of Walt Disney Animation Studios, also sees tremendous potential in exploring additional districts and introducing new animal populations. The first movie focused on mammals before Zootopia 2 welcomed reptiles into the story. Birds will now allow the filmmakers to expand the city and its conflicts even further.

Despite that growth, Spencer emphasized that Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde will remain at the heart of the series.

Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin are expected to continue bringing the characters’ combination of humor, emotion, and conflict to the screen. The franchise’s procedural elements and central mysteries will also remain an important part of its identity.

Will Nick and Judy Become a Couple?

One of the biggest debates among Zootopia fans involves the relationship between Nick and Judy. Some viewers want the pair to become romantically involved, while others prefer seeing them remain close friends and partners.

Byron Howard, who directed the first two films, understands why audiences are so invested in the question.

Howard credited Bateman and Goodwin with making audiences believe in the characters and care about their relationship. Although he did not reveal whether romance is in their future, he suggested that the filmmakers will continue exploring the tension that has kept fans talking.

The third film will also continue examining the franchise’s central themes involving predators, prey, and how very different groups learn to coexist.

Familiar Characters and Plenty of New Animals

Howard explained that the team approaches a sequel by looking back at what audiences loved while finding ways to improve upon it. That includes expanding the world, developing the characters, and taking moviegoers to places they have not previously visited.

For Zootopia 3, that approach will include “a lot” of new animals.

The arrival of birds presents numerous possibilities for the movie’s mystery, humor, environments, and social commentary. It could also challenge everything Judy and Nick believe they understand about the city they protect.

However, with the project still in early development, Disney has not announced additional casting, an official storyline, or a theatrical release date.

When Will ‘Zootopia 3’ Be Released?

Disney Animation has not revealed when Zootopia 3 will arrive in theaters. Release timing will be announced at a later date.

For now, fans know that Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde will remain at the center of the story, Gary De’Snake could potentially return, and birds are preparing to shake up the animal metropolis in a major way.

After mammals and reptiles took their turns in the spotlight, Zootopia 3 is ready to look toward the skies—and make the franchise’s already colorful world bigger than ever.
