As most everyone knows, I’m a huge fan of Marvel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sadly I wasn’t able to make it to San Diego Comic Con this past weekend, but after digging through all the videos, photos and write ups coming out of the show, I found something that has me genuinely rethinking one of this summer’s biggest MCU moments.
In the post credits scene from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we see a cloaked figure kneeling beside young Franklin Richards, son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, holding a silver mask. Almost everyone assumed this was our first look at Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom ahead of Avengers: Doomsday. But take a close look at that mask. It’s smooth and rounded through the forehead, nothing like the sharp, riveted, layered metal design we’ve seen on Doom in every Doomsday trailer and promo image released so far.
That’s where SDCC comes in. Marvel’s booth this year featured Doctor Doom’s full movie costume on display, and right alongside it, a second costume fans are now calling the “Latverian Witch.” Its mask shares that same smooth, curved shape from the post credits scene, and it’s a much closer match than Doom’s actual on screen design. Naturally, the internet immediately started theorizing. Some fans think this could be a Scarlet Witch variant, others are floating Clea, and there’s even a theory going around that the figure in the credits scene might actually be Doctor Strange wearing a follower’s mask rather than Doom himself, especially with the soundtrack apparently labeling that scene’s cue as “DOOM?” complete with a question mark.
Complicating things further, Vanessa Kirby has already confirmed to Variety that Robert Downey Jr himself was on set and under that cloak for the scene, so we know it’s really him, even if his face was never shown. Whether that means he was playing Doom in disguise, standing in for a different reveal, or something else entirely tied to the Latverian Witch is still anyone’s guess. Marvel hasn’t offered an explanation and probably won’t anytime soon. For now, this is exactly the kind of fun rabbit hole that makes the road to Avengers: Doomsday so exciting.
