Johnny Depp gave San Diego Comic-Con attendees quite the surprise on Thursday, stepping out in full Ebenezer Scrooge costume to promote his upcoming film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. Rather than doing a traditional Hall H panel, Paramount built a faux 1880s British Christmas village in the Gaslamp district, and Depp emerged straight out of the installation to greet the crowd that had been gathering for over an hour.
The moment turned into an instant fan favorite. When someone in the crowd called out “Good day to you, Mr. Scrooge,” Depp stayed fully in character and shot back with “What’s so good about it?” It’s a fun reminder that you don’t always need a full panel with clips and cast Q&As to steal the show at Comic-Con, sometimes a single unexpected appearance does the trick.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol comes from director Ti West and reimagines Charles Dickens’ classic tale as a ghost story following Scrooge’s supernatural journey through his past, present, and future. The film also stars Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen. This marks Depp’s first big Comic-Con moment since Cannes back in 2023, and fans in attendance were clearly thrilled to see him back in the spotlight.
