Happy Stranger Things Day! Netflix celebrated in a big way today by officially announcing a brand new live action prequel series, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. It is set to premiere on Netflix in 2028, and the first teaser is already here.
When and Where Is Other Worlds Set?
We are heading back in time, way back. Other Worlds takes place in 1955 in Nevada, decades before Eleven, Mike and the gang ever faced the Upside Down in Hawkins. That also puts it a few years before Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the hit stage play set in 1959.
The teaser opens on April 19, 1955, in Marion, Nevada. It shows an abandoned bike near a restricted area at night while something that looks a lot like a wormhole starts to form in the sky. Fans will also recognize the song: “Sh-Boom” by The Chords, which was featured in the show’s final season.
What Is the Story About?
The creators describe Other Worlds as a completely new story with new characters, new heroes, new villains and its own mythology. It is not an anthology, and it does not continue the story of any of the original characters.
That said, there are clear connections to The First Shadow. The Duffer Brothers have previously said the prequel will dig into the mystery behind the strange rock that a young Henry Creel finds in a scientist’s briefcase in the Nevada caves. If you have been wondering how the Upside Down really started, this sounds like the show that will tell us.

- Creators: Kate Trefry and Matt and Ross Duffer
- Showrunner: Kate Trefry, who also wrote The First Shadow and has been a writer on Stranger Things
- Director: Joe Wright, the BAFTA and Golden Globe winner behind Pride and Prejudice, will direct the first three episodes
- Executive producers: The Duffer Brothers, Shawn Levy, Joe Wright and more
The Duffers have a deal at Paramount now, so Trefry will run the show day to day, but the brothers are still very much involved through their company, Upside Down Pictures.
When Does It Come Out?
Netflix is targeting 2028. Filming is expected to start in 2027 in New Mexico, and casting has not been announced yet. As the Duffers put it in their statement, “Now, on to casting.”
