We don’t talk about Encanto 2… at least not yet. Fans hoping for a sequel to Disney’s 2021 hit Encanto got a disappointing update this week. When asked whether Encanto 2 had been discussed or greenlit, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Yvett Merino, who produced the original film, had a simple answer:
“No, but I’m always here for it.”
No Encanto Sequel in Development
Merino’s comments, shared in an interview with The Direct, confirm that Disney is not currently working on a follow up to Encanto. That might come as a surprise, considering how big the movie became. Encanto won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, became a chart topping phenomenon.
The good news is that her answer was far from a hard no. With Merino openly saying she would welcome a sequel, the door is still wide open for the Madrigals to return someday.
Why Fans Expected a Sequel
Disney has leaned heavily into sequels for its biggest animated hits in recent years, from Frozen 2 and the upcoming Frozen III to Moana 2, Zootopia 2 and the upcoming Lilo & Stitch 2. With Encanto still one of the most streamed animated movies on Disney+, many fans assumed it was only a matter of time.
Not everyone is disappointed, though. Some fans feel the story of the Madrigal family wrapped up perfectly, while others would love to see a Disney+ series or shorts exploring characters like Bruno, Luisa or Isabela.
Encanto Is Coming to Walt Disney World
While a sequel isn’t in the works, fans will soon be able to step inside the Madrigal family’s world. Merino said she is excited about the Encanto attraction coming to Florida. Disney’s first ever Encanto attraction is under construction as part of the new Tropical Americas land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, along with a new Indiana Jones attraction, and both are scheduled to open in 2027.
The attraction will invite guests inside Casita, the magical Madrigal family home, so fans can experience the magic of Encanto in person even without a new movie.
Where to Watch Encanto
Encanto is streaming now on Disney+, along with the sing along version for anyone who can’t stop singing about Bruno.
