The truth is out there, and it’s coming to Hulu. Hulu has officially given a series order to Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel. Coogler, the director behind Black Panther and Sinners, wrote and directed the pilot earlier this year, and now the show is moving forward as a full series.

New Agents, New Cases
Don’t expect Mulder and Scully this time. The new series follows “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents” who are assigned to a long shuttered division that handles unexplained phenomena. Sound familiar? It’s a fresh take on the X-Files unit, with brand new characters taking on the strange cases.
Danielle Deadwyler, known for her acclaimed performance in Till and the series Rooster, and Himesh Patel, from Station Eleven and Yesterday, lead the cast. Both are also co-executive producers.
The pilot features a strong guest cast, too: Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Amy Madigan, Devery Jacobs, and Lochlyn Munro.

Ryan Coogler Opens the X-Files
Coogler has been open about his love for the original series. He said he has “loved The X-Files for a long time” and that writing and directing the pilot “has meant a great deal” to him. His goal, he explained, is to “honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people” while finding a new path into that world.
He’s bringing some familiar collaborators along. Ludwig Göransson, the Oscar winning composer behind Black Panther and Oppenheimer, scored the pilot. That alone has fans curious about how he’ll put his own spin on one of TV’s most iconic theme songs.
Chris Carter Is On Board
Fans of the original will be glad to hear that X-Files creator Chris Carter is an executive producer on the new series. He’s joined by Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media.
Jennifer Yale, whose credits include Outlander and Legion, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The series comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television, in association with Coogler’s Proximity Media.
What About Mulder and Scully?

The original X-Files ran for nine seasons on Fox starting in 1993, spawned two feature films, and returned for two revival seasons from 2016 to 2018 with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back as Mulder and Scully.
Neither is attached to the new series right now. But Anderson hasn’t shut the door. In 2024 she said of a possible return, “I’m not saying no,” and called Coogler “a brilliant, brilliant director.” A cameo would be a dream for longtime fans.
When Will The X-Files Premiere on Hulu?
Hulu hasn’t announced a premiere date or episode count yet. We’ll keep you updated as more details are revealed.
