Something unexpected lit up the sky near Disney’s Hollywood Studios late Tuesday night, and Disney fans were quick to take notice! Disney was spotted testing fireworks from the park’s World Drive launch site, a location that rarely sees action, and naturally, everyone is wondering what it could mean.

Guests and park watchers on social media reported large fireworks shells launching every couple of minutes throughout the late-night test, with video quickly making the rounds showing the impressive shells visible from outside the park.
So What’s the World Drive Launch Site?
For those who may not be familiar, the World Drive fireworks launch site sits just outside of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, across the road from the park. It was originally built to replace an older fireworks setup that used a trailer near the former tram tour station, paired with low-level pyrotechnics fired from rooftops around the Great Movie Ride. That older setup couldn’t survive the park’s major redevelopment, and the World Drive site became its replacement.

The launch site first debuted with Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular on June 17, 2016, and has also been used for Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! and Hollywood Studios’ New Year’s Eve celebrations. Outside of those, it’s seen very little use, which is why Tuesday night’s test immediately caught people’s attention.
What Could It Be For?
Disney hasn’t officially said what the test was for, but there’s a pretty strong clue. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is scheduled to close early on October 20, 2026, from 8PM to 11PM for a private buyout tied to the Gartner IT Symposium | Xpo conference. A custom nighttime fireworks show for that corporate event is the most likely explanation for the test.
That said, some fans are holding out hope that this could signal something more exciting, maybe an upgraded fireworks component for Jollywood Nights, or something else entirely…I would LOVE it to be the Star Wars fireworks!! For now, Disney isn’t saying.

It’s always fun when something unexpected lights up the Disney sky, even if it turns out to be a corporate event! We’ll keep our eyes on any developments and let you know if more details emerge.
