Beloved Gargoyles Live action Reboot Scrapped at Disney+ Creator Speaks out

The live-action Gargoyles reboot that was in development at Disney+ is officially dead. Greg Weisman, the creator of the beloved 1994 animated series, confirmed the news during an August 2026 appearance at Chicago Fan Expo. Weisman told fans directly: “Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead.” He also confirmed that there are currently no plans for any live-action version of the franchise moving forward.

The project had serious talent attached to it. James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster had secured the license back in 2023, with horror writer Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home) set as writer and showrunner. Dauberman had spoken about wanting to preserve the original show’s darker, serialized tone. Unfortunately, the project never made it past early development. No casting was ever announced and no release date was ever set before it quietly fell apart.

This is not the first time a Gargoyles revival has come up short. Back in 2018, director Jordan Peele pitched a live-action film version that Disney passed on. In 2020, animator Ciro Nieli pitched an animated sequel series that was declined due to post-pandemic cost-cutting. The Atomic Monster project was the most promising attempt yet, and it too has now come to nothing. The cancellation also fits a larger pattern at Disney+, which has recently scrapped Marvel’s Wonder Man Season 2 and a live-action Power Rangers reboot as the platform tightens its content strategy.

There may still be a flicker of hope for fans of the clan though. In July 2026, Brent Spiner, who voiced Puck in the original series, hinted that a new animated Gargoyles series could be in the works. When asked about animation at Fan Expo, Weisman said only that he has “no idea about animation,” which fans are reading as a carefully worded non-denial. All three seasons of the original series are available to stream right now on Disney+. Are you heartbroken over the live-action cancellation, or would you rather see an animated revival?
