Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant celebrates National Irish Coffee Day Saturday, Jan. 25, with a renowned San Francisco Irish coffee expert known for his high-speed coffee-mixing skills. Raglan Road invites guests to watch Tony Hernandez of Buena Vista Café in San Francisco craft up to a dozen Irish coffees in 90 seconds while enjoying the pub’s all-day deal: “You buy the coffee, we buy the whiskey.”
Hernandez will entertain Raglan Road guests Saturday afternoon and evening. His west coast home base, Buena Vista Café, is the busiest Irish Whiskey bar in the world, making an average of 2,000 Irish coffees a day.
Irish coffee is was created in 1943 by Joe Sheridan, a chef at Foynes Airbase in County Limerick, Ireland. It was crafted to warm up transatlantic passengers with a blend of hot coffee, sugar, Irish whiskey, and cream. The drink gained international recognition in 1952 when travel writer Stanton Delaplane introduced it to the Buena Vista Café in San Francisco, which continues to serve it to this day. Irish coffee since has become a symbol of Irish hospitality, enjoyed during various social gatherings and celebrations.
Raglan Road invites guests to visit for brunch or dinner on Jan. 25 and raise a glass to the national holiday wake-up call. “Coffee and whiskey each have their own holiday, so Irish coffee deserves an even bigger one,” says Raglan Road General Manager Rachael Conroy. At Raglan Road, the Irish coffee specialty menu rocks right along with the pub’s live Irish music and dance. Three coffee-based cocktails are served daily: The Lost Irish, a traditional mix of coffee, whiskey, sugar and cream; the Iced Irish, Bushmills Original Irish Whiskey, butterscotch, Baileys Salted Caramel, cold brew coffee and whipped cream; and the Irish Espresso Martini, Slane Irish Whiskey, J.F. Hadens espresso liqueur, Guinness simple syrup, and chilled espresso.
“In Ireland, the Irish coffee is a staple,” Conroy says. “Enjoy one after lunch or dinner, as a nightcap, or as an afternoon treat, there are no rules! Come join us for National Irish Coffee Day!”
