Disney Cruise Line Shares Details on Expanding Fleet

Earlier today, Disney Cruise Line released more details about the expansion of the Disney Cruise Line Fleet that they talked about at D23 in August 2024.  The announcement comes with the introduction of a new class of ships as well as a fourth ship to the Wish class.  The ships, which Walt Disney Imagineering is designing, are set to begin sailing between 2027 and 2031 and their construction will be done at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

“As we expand our fleet, it is important that we continue to provide a variety of experiences for our Guests. Families enjoy the diversity of vacations we offer, from our classic vessels to our Wish-class ships. They also expect to explore a broad range of destinations, including those that prefer to host smaller ships,” said Thomas Mazloum, president, New Experiences Portfolio & Disney Signature Experiences. “At the same time, we are focused on implementing new technology and designs that align with our longstanding commitment to the environment.”

The three vessels that will be in the new ship class will feature industry-leading technology and design to expand Disney Cruise Line’s global reach and support its environmental goals. They have said the ships will be able to accommodate 3,000 Guests and the ships will weigh approximately 100,000 gross tons.  This will make the ships 20% larger than those in the Disney Magic class but smaller than the Disney Dream and Disney Wish classes.  This will give Disney the ability to utilize more ports and destinations around the globe.  This new class of ships is planned to be delivered in 2029, 2030 and 2031.

These new ships will be more energy-efficient with streamlined hulls, the latest next-generation propulsion and power systems, along with other operations fully optimized. These ships will utilize the latest technology along with their innovative designs and best use of materials from the bow to the stern.  These ships will also info a battery system to support and supplement the main engines.

To continue along with Disney Cruise Line’s long-standing initiatives to minimize waste, conserve water and align with the environmental goals of The Walt Disney Company.  While in port, these new ships will be able to utilize shore power technology to be able to turn off their engines and plug into the port’s energy grid to run the ship while in port.  In addition, these new ships will have the ability to operate on a variety of fuels (hydrotreated vegetable oil, renewable methanol fuels) while also being able to adapt to new fuels as they become available.  They are building these ships with future enhancements in mind.

“Our team of Disney Imagineers is dreaming up this new class of ships to be as fuel and energy efficient as possible, and our Guests will see the difference – from a more hydrodynamic design to lighter materials and energy-efficient technology throughout the ships,” said Philip Gennotte, Portfolio Project Management Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. “We’re very proud to continue to support Disney’s broader environmental goals, now and into the future.”

There is also a fourth ship coming to the Wish Class which already includes the Disney Wish, the Disney Treasure and the Disney Destiny.  The fourth ship of this class will be delivered sometime in 2027.  It will be approximately 144,000 gross tons and will be able to accommodate 4,000 guests.  This new ship will also be powered by liquefied natural gas.

Currently, the Disney Cruise Line has a fleet of 6 ships currently sailing.  The Disney Destiny will make Port Everglades its home, and the Disney Adventure, which is set to have its homeport in Singapore will begin sailing late in 2025.  A few months ago, Disney also announced its relationship with Oriental Land Co., Ltd. which will bring the Disney Cruise Line to Japan in 2029.

As of now, we don’t know the names, themes, ports or much about the new ships, but this will increase the Disney Cruise Line Fleet to 13 by the year 2031.  As more news comes out about these ships, we will be sure to share that information with you.
