Yesterday at D23 Brazil, a new trailer was released for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Captain America: Brave New World. The film is scheduled to be released on February 14, 2025. This will be the first film with Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson who has officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. This film will take place after the events of Disney+’s series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In Brave New World, Sam is expected to face new threats that challenge his ideals and leadership skills, exploring what it means for him to be Captain America. Unlike his predecessor, he doesn’t have super-soldier serum powers, which raises questions about how he will handle the physical and emotional burdens of being the symbol of America. His journey in this film is anticipated to explore how a new Captain America might redefine what the role means in a modern context, especially in light of Sam’s unique background and the sociopolitical issues he embodies.
After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (portrayed by Harrison Ford), Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.
Alongside Anthony Mackie, Captain America: Brave New World brings back some fan-favorite characters and introduces new ones. Danny Ramirez returns as Joaquín Torres, Sam’s ally from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier who is expected to take up the mantle of the Falcon in this film. Carl Lumbly reprises his role as Isaiah Bradley, a character with a complex past as a Black super-soldier during a time when America’s ideals were at odds with the treatment of Black soldiers. Bradley’s presence is especially poignant, offering historical and ethical depth to Sam’s journey and examining how he can honor the legacy of those who came before him.
Another notable returns is Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns, also known as the Leader, who first appeared in The Incredible Hulk (2008). Sterns is a scientist with a mutated brain that grants him super-intelligence, positioning him as a formidable antagonist with unique motivations and schemes. His reappearance suggests a deeper dive into scientific experimentation themes that Marvel has occasionally touched on, particularly with the Hulk storyline. As a villain, Sterns challenges Sam intellectually, adding a new layer to the kind of threats Captain America faces.
In this film we are introduced to Seth Voelker aka Sidewinder who will be played by Giancarlo Esposito. Voelker is a scientist who is the leader of the Serpent Society. The Serpent Society is a snake-themed criminal group and this is their first introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Additionally, Harrison Ford joins the MCU as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, taking over the role after William Hurt’s passing. Ross, now serving as the President of the United States, is a figure often associated with strong-arm policies and militaristic ideals. His position of power will likely create political tension for Sam, especially given Ross’s long-standing mistrust of superheroes and inclination toward authoritarian strategies. Ford’s involvement is a highlight for fans, as his character could bridge storylines between Captain America, the Hulk, and possibly even the upcoming Thunderbolts film. From the trailers we also know, Red Hulk will make his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the alter ego.
