With today being Election Day in the United States, I wanted to share something I wrote back in 2013. In 1972, there was a 3 day event that took place in October at Disneyland. Everyone’s favorite bear, Winnie the Pooh entered the election for President.
Back in 1972 there was a candidate running for President of the United States who spent 3 days campaigning at Disneyland. No it wasn’t Richard Nixon or George McGovern. The candidate for the Demo-Pooh-blican Party was none other than Winnie The Pooh. Pooh ran under the slogan “Pooh in ’72”. Disney organized a ticker-tape parade on Main Street, U.S.A. for the candidate. There was a special stage show that featured the campaign manager Eeyore and Pooh’s official press secretary Tigger.
Children were asked to gather in front of “it’s a small world” at 11:30 a.m. to join in the parade and political rally. Also during the three day event there were free showings of “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” held in the Fantasyland Theater.
Pooh, Tigger, and Eeyore are made available for meet and greets all day at their National Campaign Headquarters in the Carnation Plaza Garden. When leaving the park for the day, each child received a free Pooh for President Poster, Pin, and a coloring Kit.
Unfortunately Pooh would not be elected in 1972, Richard Nixon won the election and went on to serve as the 37th President. Even though he wasn’t successful in 1972, that didn’t stop him from running again in 1976 under the slogan “Winnie’s a Honey of a Candidate”. This time the winner was Jimmy Carter and Pooh didn’t run again. For a short time we almost had President Pooh of the United States of American. Now I don’t know exactly what his campaign promises were, but I can bet one was to put a smile on everyone’s face everyday and a Honey Pot in everyone’s pantry.
