The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen a whirlwind of changes over the past few years, but few have sparked as much conversation as the recent decision to remove “Blade” from the release schedule for 2025. The film, which was set to bring the iconic vampire hunter back to the big screen with Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali in the lead role, has faced numerous production challenges, leading to its indefinite delay.
For fans of both the character and the broader MCU, this latest update represents a significant disappointment. As one of Marvel’s darkest and most complex characters, Blade’s return was highly anticipated, especially given the acclaim surrounding the original trilogy starring Wesley Snipes. So, why has this film encountered so many roadblocks, and what does it mean for Marvel’s future plans?
Blade’s Troubled Development
Marvel Studios first announced a new Blade movie during their 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel, where Mahershala Ali was revealed as the new Daywalker. The announcement generated immediate excitement, as Ali, fresh off his Academy Award wins for “Moonlight” and “Green Book,” was seen as a perfect fit for the role. Moreover, the character Blade had long been credited with paving the way for the modern superhero film genre, thanks to the successful trilogy of movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Bringing Blade into the MCU promised to explore darker, more mature storytelling involving supernatural elements like vampires and occult magic.
However, despite the initial fanfare, the project has been plagued by delays and creative changes. In 2022, reports emerged that the original director, Bassam Tariq, had exited the project due to creative differences and scheduling conflicts, just weeks before production was set to begin. This was a significant setback for the film, as finding a new director who could align with both Marvel’s vision and Ali’s expectations would prove difficult. Following Tariq’s departure, Marvel brought on Yann Demange, known for his work on “Lovecraft Country,” to take over the project. While Demange’s addition was seen as a positive step, it was clear that the film was in need of significant retooling.
The Writers’ Strike and Other Delays
Just as it seemed that the project was back on track, the industry-wide Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike in 2023 further complicated matters. Production had to be paused as writers across Hollywood went on strike, demanding better pay and working conditions. This not only affected “Blade” but also other MCU projects, leading to a reshuffling of Marvel’s entire release calendar.
Even after the WGA strike was resolved, production issues persisted. Reports suggested that the script had undergone multiple rewrites, with Ali reportedly expressing dissatisfaction with the direction of the story. These rewrites contributed to ongoing delays, pushing the start of filming further back and leaving the project in limbo.
By October 2024, it was confirmed that “Blade” had been removed from Marvel’s 2025 slate entirely, with no new release date announced. This decision suggests that Marvel is once again going back to the drawing board, possibly reworking the story and production elements from the ground up.
What Blade’s Delay Means for the MCU
The removal of “Blade” from Marvel’s upcoming schedule is more than just a setback for one film — it may signal broader issues within the MCU’s current phase. After the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, which culminated in “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel has faced a mixed response to its subsequent films and shows. While movies like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” have been well-received, others like “Eternals”and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” have been met with more tepid reactions, both critically and at the box office.
Blade was seen as an important addition to Phase 5 or 6 of the MCU, bringing in supernatural elements and potentially expanding the universe’s scope. His inclusion would have dovetailed with other Marvel projects involving the occult, such as the rumored Midnight Sons team (which could include characters like Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, and Black Knight). With Blade’s delay, it’s unclear how or when these plans will unfold, potentially pushing back other interconnected storylines.
Additionally, the delay is a reflection of Marvel’s shifting strategy. The studio has been criticized in recent years for overextending itself, with too many interconnected films and TV shows. CEO Kevin Feige has acknowledged this, suggesting that Marvel might scale back on the sheer number of projects being produced to focus on quality over quantity. Blade’s delay could be part of this recalibration, ensuring that when the film finally does release, it lives up to the high expectations set by fans and the MCU’s overall reputation.
What’s Next for Blade?
While “Blade” may no longer be on the immediate horizon, it’s clear that Marvel remains committed to the character. The inclusion of Mahershala Ali in the title role indicates that the studio still sees the potential for the film to be a major success once these creative hurdles are overcome.
For now, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the Daywalker back in action. However, if Marvel’s track record is any indication, the delays could ultimately result in a more refined, impactful film. Blade, as a character and concept, has too much potential to be sidelined permanently. Whether it’s in 2026 or beyond, the Daywalker will eventually return, ready to hunt vampires and bring a new shade of darkness to the MCU.
