In the updated storyline, Henrie’s character, grown-up Justin Russo, has forsaken his wizarding powers for a normal, magic-free life with his family. However, his life takes a magical turn when a young wizard, portrayed by Janice LeAnn Brown of Disney’s “Just Roll With It,” seeks his assistance in training and safeguarding the future of the wizarding world.
Gomez will make a guest appearance in the pilot as Alex Russo, Justin’s sister. Additional cast members include Mimi Gianopulos and Alkaio Thiele, playing Justin’s wife, Giada, and elder son, Roman, respectively.
The pilot is being written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, known for their work on “Raven’s Home,” and the executive production team includes Gomez, Henrie, Gary Marsh, and director Andy Fickman. “Wizards of Waverly Place” played a pivotal role in launching Selena Gomez’s career and was part of Disney Channel’s era of successful sitcoms like Hannah Montana, Lizzie McGuire, That’s So Raven, and others. While Disney Channel’s live-action comedy production has slowed in recent years, the revival aims to bring back the magic to the network’s programming lineup.
