It’s official–“Spider-Man: No Way Home” has officially passed “Avatar” at the domestic box office as it becomes the third-highest-grossing film ever.
The film’s domestic box office now amounts to $760.9 million, which comes just ahead of Avatar’s $760.5 million in earnings. For those who think “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will continue to swing to the top of the box office charts–that probably isn’t the case. The web-slinging adventure film would need another $100 million to match “Avengers: Endgame,” which sits at $858 million total, the second-highest ever.
For those wondering what film sits at number 1–it remains to be “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which earned a reported $936 million at the box office. However, where “Spider-Man: No Way Home” sits at number 1 is with Sony as it currently is the studio’s highest-grossing movie ever released.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” picks up right where the previous film in the franchise ends, with Peter Parker’s secret identity revealed to the entire world. Desperate for help, Peter turns to Doctor Strange to make the world forget that he is Spider-Man. However, the spell goes horribly wrong and shatters the multiverse, bringing in monstrous villains that could destroy the world.
Earlier this month, Tom Holland reacted to the news that the film was on track to pass “Avatar” at the domestic box office, saying: “Wow, that’s incredible! I didn’t know that, honestly. That’s amazing!” he said, visibly still stunned by the news. “Wow, um, I mean… It’s mind-blowing. It’s honestly mind-blowing.”
At this time, we know for sure there will be more “Spider-Man” films. Although, as for who will be portraying the Marvel Comics superhero we’re not certain. There’s been significant talk it could be Holland. It seems we may have a little bit of a wait before we figure out who will put on the famous suit in the next “Spider-Man” trilogy.
