For those who have been waiting to see “Eternals” for free on their Disney+ account–tonight is the night! Beginning tonight, Jan. 11, Marvel’s “Eternals” will be streaming to all users.
Marvel’s “Eternals” is the largest Disney-owned release to drop on the magical streaming service as of recent. For those who are counting down the minutes, “Eternals” officially drops at midnight P.T. and 3 a.m. ET.
The film was in theaters 68 days ago and is releasing much later in its release cycle than other Disney films over the last year. Of course, this release is quicker than normal pre-pandemic times, when films wouldn’t usually come to the service until five to eight months after its release in theaters.
Now, as a means to promote the streaming service over other at-home methods of viewing major films, Disney has streamlined their process to have films release exclusively on Disney+ following their release in theaters. In the past, films would go from theaters to other formats like Blu-Ray, online rentals, and DVD and then Disney+ would come months after these. However, Disney has shaken things up!
For those who have not been following the MCU up until Marvel’s “Eternals,” the film follows the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and takes a look at an unexpected tragedy that forces the Eternals, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years, out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.
Upon its release in theaters, Marvel’s “Eternals” passed $300 million in worldwide box office revenue. In its second weekend of release, the superhero adventure collected a leading $27.5 million from 4,090 North American theaters. However, it wasn’t the success many critics expected it to be.
