A new photo from the set of Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2 shows the Sanderson sisters back inside their old cottage. The highly anticipated sequel reunites Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the trio of witches: Winnie, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson. The malevolent threesome has been knit onto the fabric of Halloween in the decades since Hocus Pocus hit theaters in 1993. Hell-bent on staying young forever, the Sanderson sisters ran amuck in Salem, MA, throughout the first flick, ultimately failing to meet their devilish desires!
Disney delighted fans in 2020 by announcing that a follow-up film was finally in the works. Excitement grew to an entirely new level when it was revealed that Midler, Najimy, and Parker were all signed on. With Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) at the helm, Hocus Pocus 2 officially started production in the fall of 2021. This time around, the crew chose Rhode Island as their main location, transforming the Ocean State into Salem. Eager onlookers immediately snuck photos and videos of the set as it was built across the state. One structure, in particular, was often posted by fans: the facade of a colonial cottage boasting the sign “Olde Salem Magic Shoppe.”
Hocus Pocus Guide, a popular Instagram account that’s dedicated to keeping the world abreast on all things Hocus Pocus, shared a first look at the Sanderson sisters back inside their old home. Check out the enchanting new photo below!
Donning their legendary looks, the three stars appear to be reacting to something just off-frame. A high pedestal suggests it can only be one thing: Winifred’s beloved book of spells. The performers’ reactions prove that they are each fully back in touch with the characters they created nearly three decades ago. Winnie seems like she’s reunited with an old loved one, Mary has on her signature side-mouth surprise, and Sarah bounces with joy.
It’s thrilling to see the Sandersons back in their old cottage. Audiences first saw them at home at the beginning of the original movie. Nestled deep in the woods of Salem, the Tudor house is reflective of the witches’ English style. Distinctive features included purple smoke billowing from the chimney and a large waterwheel on the side. When Hocus Pocus flashed forward to then-modern day Salem, the Sandersons’ home had been turned into a museum. The museum shut down due to spooky occurrences, gathering cobwebs until Max Dennison foolishly lit the Black Flame Candle there and conjured the Sandersons back to life.
In Hocus Pocus 2, the Sandersons’ cottage has been transformed yet again. This time it appears to be wedged into more of an urban setting, serving as a magic shoppe. Based on the photo and the film’s synopsis, which appears to pay several homages to its predecessor, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that the sisters were revived at the cottage once again. Although, since they exploded in all their sparkly glory in the woods at the end of the first film, perhaps Hocus Pocus 2 could see them come back to life closer to the cemetery in the forest. Audiences won’t know for sure until the movie premieres in the fall of 2022.
