Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star Jonathan Majors has yet to miss a Marvel movie, making him quite prepared to play Kang the Conqueror. Majors earned raves last year for his role on HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and since then he’s begun to amass some major projects. In addition to reports that he’ll appear in Michael B. Jordan’s Creed 3, Majors boarded the MCU last September when he was cast in Ant-Man 3. At the time, it was strongly suggested he would be playing the formidable comics villain Kang the Conqueror, but that fact wasn’t confirmed until December.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania officially entered development in late 2019. Paul Rudd will once again play pint-sized hero Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, while Evangeline Lilly is also back as Hope Van Dyne, aka the Wasp. The film is slated for release in February 2023, yet production is already kicking off. Rudd recently confirmed he’s in London filming Quantumania, which will be directed by Peyton Reed. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but theories have already begun to spread about how Kang will be introduced to the MCU.
Majors recently appeared on the podcast Just for Variety to discuss everything from Lovecraft Country to Ant-Man 3. When it came to the latter, Majors admitted he was already very prepared to join the MCU prior to being cast as Kang because he’s seen every movie. “The wonderful thing about my timeline for my education is that I watched the Marvel films, and to that end the DC films, blow up. I watched it happen,” he said. This has given him a clever perspective on the entire franchise, as he explained (via ComicBook.com):
“I got to watch those movies in context, and actually I never missed one either. It’s just so culturally, our culture is so steeped in it. If someone made a time capsule they would go ‘Yeah, superhero movies.’
“Because I was watching these movies at a certain time in my training I did watch and go ‘Oh, I see what they’re doing there. I see what it is, Oh, they’re Greek plays.’ The superhero genre, but particularly Marvel in my opinion, They’re Greek. The size of them. The things they’re dealing with. The idea of fate and fantasy and future and legacy. All these things… I see rhythms and rhymes correlating in the Marvel universe, Ant-Man included, I see that.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Majors shot down the rumors that he’ll first appear as Kang on Loki. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania currently remains Majors’ MCU debut, and it sounds like he’s approaching this in a very unique way. It’s easy for people to look at something as superhero-heavy as the MCU and only see it as a comic book fantasy. However, Majors likening it to Greek tragedies could bring an extra level of gravitas to his performance. Kang is an impressive figure, not unlike a Greek god. It’s fitting then that Majors should be the one to play him since he possesses this deeper understanding.
When new actors join the MCU, they’re often asked about how they prepared for the role. Some read comics, while others admit they don’t know much about the rest of the franchise. That Majors has seen every movie goes beyond simple research; it shows that he admires what the MCU has done. As he said, pop culture today is thoroughly steeped in superheroes, and it’s an evolution that has been fascinating to watch. Majors is aware of what these characters mean to audiences, and that should give him an interesting perspective as he approaches his debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
