Just this week we got the official release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which appears to be the final installment of the franchise. At least–it will be the final film in the franchise that James Gunn plans to be a part of.
Earlier this week Marvel Studios released a trailer looking at the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which included the official title of the third film and its release date. Following this film release, Twitter user Kaine Richardson tweeted Gunn and star James Pratt asking if this third film will be the last or if there will be a fourth. Gunn replied: “I’m planning on it being my last.”

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Gunn has responded with this reply to this same question.
Late last year, Gunn confirmed the script for the third film was finalized and that production was in the active process of hiring crew members.
“[The] script is written and most of the production heads have been hired,” Gunn told a fan on Twitter last November. Gunn also confirmed cameras would begin to roll on the property later this year.
At this time, not much is known about what fans can expect from this third and final film from Gunn. The only details the director has given in the past is that Rocket will have a major role in the storyline.
“I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along,” Gunn wrote during a ComicBook.com Quarantine Watch Party last year.
